Kanpur: Efforts have also begun to open a skin bank in the under-construction burn ward of Hallet in Kanpur. The skin of the body donors can be preserved here. This will be the first skin bank of the state. Since the skin taken out from the dead body works as the best dressing material for the wounds of burn patients. This helps in healing the wounds quickly. In such a situation, the lives of 100% burn patients can also be saved. Yug Dadhichi Dehdaan Sansthan has also started a campaign for skin donation.
Dr. Premshankar, Head of Surgery Department and Senior Plastic Surgeon of GSVM Medical College, said that the work of the upgraded burn ward in Hallet will be completed this year. Along with this, the process of opening a skin bank will be started. The skin donated for 100% burn patients is life saving. Skin banks are open in South India. This saves the lives of patients. Apart from this, a skin bank is also being operated in Jaipur.
The country’s first skin bank was opened in 1972 in Wadia Children’s Hospital Mumbai. On the other hand, Manoj Sengar, head of Yug Dadhichi Dehdaan Sansthan, has talked to the medical college management regarding the skin bank. The institute donates the dead bodies to the anatomy department of the medical college and the corneas to the ophthalmology department. He said that along with the eyes of the donors, their skin will also be donated. It takes 15 minutes to half an hour to remove the skin from the dead body.
There is no rejection of the skin, there is no problem of blood group either
Dr. Premshankar said that the thin layer of skin of the dead body, epi dermis, dermis is removed. It works like a dressing material. There is no problem of any kind of rejection. The skin of the dead body of any blood group can be applied to anyone. Due to the absence of skin on the wounds of burn patients, the body fluid keeps coming out. Protein also comes out in it. By applying a layer of skin, the fluid does not come out. The wound starts healing. Within two weeks, the patient’s own skin starts forming and the donated skin applied as dressing material peels off as a scab. The skin applied on top remains alive for two weeks. The layer of skin is removed within eight hours of the death of the donor.
What is a skin bank?
Skin bank is also like a blood bank. Here the skin is filled in a bottle and kept at room temperature. Skin can be kept safe in the bank for three to five years. Before keeping it, skin infection etc. is also checked.
The work of the skin bank will be started soon. By applying a layer of skin, the wounds of burn patients do not get infected. Apart from this, fluid does not come out. Patients spend lakhs on dressing in two weeks. There will also be savings in expenses by applying a layer of skin. -Dr. Sanjay Kala, Principal, GSVM Medical College.
I represented the state in the organ donation and body donation seminar held in Jaipur on August 17. A skin bank is running in Jaipur. There is a need to open similar skin banks in the medical institutions of the state. In this regard, I also talked to GSVM Principal Dr. Sanjay Kala. I have also sent a letter to the Chief Minister. Along with body donation and eye donation, skin donation will also be done. – Manoj Sengar, Head Yug Dadhichi Body Donation Institute
