New Delhi: Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips, the Prime Minister of Guyana, landed in Delhi to participate in the 2025 World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS). The visit is expected to further solidify the strong and multifaceted ties between India and Guyana, particularly in areas of renewable energy and sustainable development.
According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Prime Minister Phillips’ visit underscores the “robust and expanding India-Guyana relationship,” which will gain further momentum through collaborative initiatives.
The WSDS, scheduled to take place from March 5 to 7, is hosted annually by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and serves as a premier multistakeholder platform for discussions on global sustainability. The theme for this year’s summit is ‘Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions.’
Guyana’s Health Minister Frank Anthony recently expressed deep appreciation for India’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking in February, he acknowledged India’s role in providing essential vaccines at a time when global supplies were scarce. “Despite its own challenges, India did not hoard vaccines but instead prioritized sharing with nations like ours,” he said.
Anthony highlighted that Indian-supplied vaccines played a crucial role in safeguarding Guyana’s frontline healthcare workers and population during the pandemic. “We are deeply grateful for India’s contribution, which has significantly strengthened our bilateral partnership,” he remarked.
Beyond pandemic support, India’s advancements in healthcare continue to inspire Guyana. “India has made remarkable progress in healthcare, from preventive care to cutting-edge treatments. We aim to incorporate some of these practices in Guyana,” Anthony added.
The diplomatic ties between the two nations have also been reinforced through high-profile visits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Guyana in recent years, fostering agreements that bolstered economic and strategic cooperation. “Their presence and engagement have further deepened our friendship,” Anthony noted.
As Prime Minister Phillips joins global leaders at the WSDS, the India-Guyana relationship is set to witness new avenues of collaboration, particularly in sustainable development and climate resilience.
