SUNDERLAND — Granit Xhaka, the newly-signed midfielder for Sunderland, has described his move to the Premier League newcomers as “the biggest challenge of my career so far.” In an interview with JioHotstar, the veteran Swiss international expressed his enthusiasm and determination to help the club establish itself in the top flight.
Xhaka, 32, joins Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen and becomes the Black Cats’ seventh summer signing ahead of the 2025-26 season. The former Arsenal captain cited a desire for a “new and big challenge” as the primary reason for his return to English football.
“When I spoke with the club, I was very excited to come here—to feel the energy, the mentality, the people, the players, and overall atmosphere around the club,” Xhaka said. “It was exactly what I wanted, and that’s why I decided to join.”

Acknowledging the pressure that comes with playing for a newly promoted side, Xhaka framed the situation as a positive opportunity. “It’s definitely a different kind of pressure,” he noted. “But I have a good feeling. I see the potential for a big change, and I want to be part of it, to be part of this football club and write our own history.”

The midfielder, who spent seven years in the UK with Arsenal, believes his experience and mentality will be key to Sunderland’s success. “What you can expect from me is a wealth of experience from different types of European football I’ve played, along with a strong mentality,” he explained. He promised to “give the fans a lot of energy, mentality, and passion—fighting for every ball, for my teammates, for the badge, and for the club.”

Xhaka also reflected on the current Sunderland squad, which features a mix of youth and experience. “A team needs a good balance,” he stated. “I’m not finished yet; the hunger to achieve great things is still very much here.” He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to find its rhythm and succeed on the pitch.
In a direct message to supporters, Xhaka asked for their unwavering backing. “We need the club’s and fans’ support, no matter what happens. But one thing is certain—we will give our all and hopefully achieve the goals we’ve set.”
