Gomti Task Force to Revive Wetland for Migratory Birds; LDA Signs MoU, Restoration Work Begins

Lucknow | Lucknow’s emerging eco-tourism hotspot—a sprawling wetland in CG City—is set for a major ecological makeover as migratory birds begin arriving for the winter season. To enhance the habitat and welcome these winged visitors, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has signed an agreement with the Gomti Task Force and the Turtle Survival Alliance. Under this collaboration, harmful aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth will be removed, solid waste will be managed, and oxygen levels in the water will be regulated.

37-Acre Wetland Gets a New Lease of Life

LDA Vice-Chairman Prathamesh Kumar informed that the 37-acre wetland, located behind the Ekana Cricket Stadium in CG City, has already become a thriving nesting ground for various species of native and migratory birds. With winter settling in, flocks of migratory birds have started arriving, prompting the authority to undertake a comprehensive rejuvenation of the wetland.

Under the agreement, the Gomti Task Force—led by Territorial Army Major A.S. Nagi—has commenced on-ground restoration work. Removed water hyacinth and other organic matter will be converted into nutrient-rich compost, ensuring eco-friendly disposal and reuse.

Scientific Water Treatment Through Bio-Technology

The LDA has planned systematic monitoring of water quality by sending regular samples for lab testing. A combination of chemical and biological methods will be used to treat polluted water. Wetland-friendly plants like canna and vetiver will be introduced to naturally purify the water and maintain adequate oxygen levels, enabling aquatic life to flourish.

Additionally, treated water from the CG City STP will be supplied to the wetland throughout the year, ensuring stable water levels across seasons.

A Favourate Spot for Birdwatchers

The wetland has already become a popular destination for birdwatchers. To enhance the visitor experience, the area features bird-watching hides, watchtowers, and viewing decks, offering picturesque views of the landscape and its vibrant wildlife. A stamped pathway and protective railings allow visitors to explore the site comfortably.

Currently, entry to the wetland is free, making it an attractive outing spot for families, nature enthusiasts, and tourists alike.

With the ongoing restoration work, the wetland is poised to become one of Lucknow’s most significant ecological and recreational assets—ensuring a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming habitat for birds and humans alike.
