Agra: The Yogi Adityanath government is advancing its mission to transform Agra from a city known solely for its historic monuments into a major centre for cultural and religious tourism. At the heart of this effort is the upcoming ‘Geeta Govind Vatika’, being developed across 19 acres in the Zonal Park of Tajganj Phase-II.
The project is expected to significantly boost overnight tourism in Agra by offering visitors a unique spiritual and cultural experience rooted in the heritage of Braj. With an open-air arena for Krishna Leelas, a special forest of 100 Tulsi varieties, stone inscriptions of the teachings of the Gita, and a dazzling nightly laser show, the Vatika aims to enhance Agra’s appeal far beyond its daytime attractions.
Beyond Monuments: Agra’s New Cultural Tourism Identity
Under the Chief Minister Tourism Development Participation Scheme, the Vatika is being developed at a cost of ₹4.20 crore, shared equally between the state government and the Agra Development Authority (ADA). The curated theme lighting and laser show are among its key highlights, designed to give tourists an immersive night-time cultural experience.
ADA Vice-Chairperson M. Arunmoli said the state government’s goal is to establish Agra not just as a historical destination but also as a vibrant centre of cultural tourism.
“Until now, tourists primarily visited monuments during the day. With Geeta Govind Vatika, we are creating a serene, culturally rich night-time space that encourages tourists to stay back. This extended stay will directly strengthen the local economy and generate new employment opportunities,” she said.
A Unique Blend of Faith, Art and Nature
A two-acre open-air amphitheatre is being constructed inside the Vatika, where Krishna Leelas, Raas Leelas and other devotional performances will be staged regularly. To maintain authenticity, plantation of flora associated with the era of Lord Krishna is underway.
One of the most significant features of the Vatika will be the Gita teachings carved on stone plaques and displayed through vibrant oil paintings, offering visitors a reflective spiritual experience.
Additionally, a dedicated Tulsi Forest, spread over one acre and featuring 100 varieties of Tulsi plants, will provide information on their medicinal properties, blending faith with environmental awareness.

Tourism Industry Hails the Project as a Game Changer
Agra Tourism Guild President Amulya Kakkar lauded the initiative, calling it a transformative step for Agra’s tourism industry.
“Agra has long been seen as a one-day destination. Geeta Govind Vatika will play a crucial role in making it an overnight destination,” he said.
He added that the nightly cultural and religious presentations will attract tourists and benefit local businesses including hotels, restaurants and guides.
Kakkar emphasised that the project not only brings a new dimension to Agra’s tourism profile but also aligns with the Yogi government’s efforts to present the spiritual and cultural heritage of Braj to a global audience.
A Cultural Renaissance for the Taj City
With its blend of spirituality, art, nature and technology, Geeta Govind Vatika is set to redefine the tourism landscape of Agra. It will enrich visitors’ understanding of Braj culture while giving the city a strong footing as a premier cultural and religious tourism destination.
As work moves ahead at a rapid pace, Agra is poised to offer much more than the Taj—inviting the world to experience the essence of Krishna’s land in a new, vibrant form.
