Garhmukteshwar to Emerge as Hub of Faith, Culture, and Rural Tourism with ₹19.5 Crore Boost

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has approved development projects worth ₹19.50 crore to enhance the religious, cultural, and rural tourism potential of Garhmukteshwar in Hapur district. This initiative aims to transform the ancient town into a major spiritual and cultural destination, attracting both domestic and international tourists and generating local employment.

Announcing the projects, Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh stated that Garhmukteshwar, situated on the banks of the Ganga, holds significant religious and mythological importance. “These projects will not only beautify sacred sites but also provide modern tourist amenities. The goal is to enrich the visitor experience while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for the local population,” he said.

Major Developments Underway:

Among the projects is the revitalization of Brijghat, a key pilgrimage site, where plans include:

  • A water laser show
  • Vending zones and food plazas
  • Modern community facilities

Other heritage sites such as Nakka Kuan (near Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurudwara), Kalyaneshwar Mahadev Temple, and Panchayat Mandir (Bada Bazaar) will also undergo tourism-driven restoration.

The Tourism Minister emphasized the spiritual significance of Muktidham and the ancient Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple, believed to fulfill devotees’ wishes. The annual Kartik Purnima Mela, held here for over 5,000 years, draws thousands of pilgrims and is steeped in mythological lore.

Rural Tourism and Homestays:

To provide a grassroots cultural experience, the Tourism Department has developed 10 rural homestays in Pooth Pushpavati, a riverside village linked to the Mahabharata era. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the local lifestyle, traditions, and cuisine while exploring serene ghats, ancient temples, and historical mounds like Shankar Teela.

Local residents are playing an active role in this transformation. The government has provided training in hospitality, storytelling, food safety, and tour guiding. A recent workshop taught 15 women and youth how to make eco-friendly incense and dhoop sticks using cow dung, flowers, and herbs—focusing on branding, packaging, and market linkage to promote self-reliance.

Ideal Weekend Getaway:

Given its proximity to the National Capital Region, Garhmukteshwar is fast becoming a prime weekend destination for tourists from Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh. It offers a rare blend of spiritual serenity, cultural richness, local crafts, and rural experiences.

“The future of tourism lies in community involvement and inclusive growth. Garhmukteshwar is being positioned not just as a pilgrimage center but also as a model of sustainable rural tourism,” said Minister Jaiveer Singh.

With these comprehensive projects and community-led initiatives, Garhmukteshwar is set to become a shining example of how heritage, faith, and rural development can go hand-in-hand to boost regional tourism and empower local communities.
