From Basic Amenities to Smart Classes: UP Witnesses Transformation in Education

Lucknow | The education landscape in Uttar Pradesh has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, with the state government’s flagship initiatives ‘Operation Kayakalp’ and ‘Project Alankar’ turning dilapidated schools into modern, safe, and well-equipped centers of learning.

Launched in 2018, Operation Kayakalp aimed to revamp primary schools by providing essential infrastructure. Today, nearly 97% of the set targets have been achieved. Schools that once struggled without toilets, drinking water, electricity, or furniture now boast boundary walls with gates, tiled washrooms for boys, girls, and differently-abled children, solar-powered lighting, painted premises, modern classrooms with tiled flooring, clean kitchens, ramps, libraries, and health-related facilities. The NITI Aayog has recognized the initiative as a model for the entire country.

On the secondary education front, the state rolled out Project Alankar, which focuses on improving 2,295 schools across 27 parameters. These schools have been equipped with smart classes, computer labs, science laboratories, Wi-Fi, libraries, sports grounds, open gyms, multipurpose halls, art and craft rooms, and vocational training spaces. Infrastructure upgrades include principal’s offices, staff rooms, secure boundary walls, rainwater harvesting systems, solar panels, CCTV surveillance, fire safety equipment, and even bicycle stands.

Before 2017, many government schools in Uttar Pradesh were in a dismal state, with crumbling buildings and a lack of even the most basic amenities. This contributed to declining student attendance and eroded public trust in the system. The current government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, placed education as a top priority, with a clear emphasis on providing quality, inclusive, and equitable learning opportunities for every child.

These efforts have not only improved facilities but also restored parents’ faith in government schools, particularly in rural areas. What were once neglected buildings are now some of the most attractive, safe, and resourceful spaces in villages. More importantly, the transformation is laying a strong foundation for millions of children, ensuring that education in Uttar Pradesh is no longer just about access, but about quality and modernity.

With this ongoing educational revolution, Uttar Pradesh is setting new benchmarks, proving that well-planned initiatives can change the future of both schools and students.
