Fauja Singh: The Turbaned Tornado Bows Out, But His Legacy Runs On
Beas Pind, Punjab – The world today mourns the loss of a legend whose life defied limits and whose spirit never stopped running. Fauja Singh, fondly known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” passed away at the age of 114 after being hit by an unidentified vehicle in his native village of Beas Pind, near Jalandhar. Succumbing to head injuries, his passing leaves a void that no finish line can fill.
Born on April 1, 1911, Fauja’s life was one of sheer determination. From battling childhood weakness that delayed his first steps until the age of five to becoming the world’s oldest marathon runner, his journey was nothing short of extraordinary.
After enduring personal tragedies — the loss of his wife and son — Fauja moved to East London in 1992. At the age of 83, he took to running to cope with grief, turning pain into power. In 2000, he ran his first marathon in London at 89. By 2011, he stunned the world by completing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon at the claimed age of 100, setting a milestone no one had dared dream of.
With his flowing white beard, colorful turbans, and unwavering faith, he wasn’t just a runner — he was a beacon of hope. He ran nine full marathons, featured in Adidas’ iconic “Impossible is Nothing” campaign, and carried the Olympic Torch in 2012. His humble demeanor, plant-based lifestyle, and belief in “running while talking to God” inspired millions.
Though he retired from competitive running in 2013, Fauja never stepped away from the spirit of the sport. He remained a cherished figure at marathons worldwide, encouraging others with his signature warmth and unstoppable energy.

Global tributes poured in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered him as “a shining symbol of India’s indomitable spirit.” Marathon great Eliud Kipchoge called him “the ultimate proof that greatness has no age.” MP Preet Kaur Gill perhaps captured it best: “Age is just a number, but attitude is everything.”
Fauja Singh’s story — immortalized in Khushwant Singh’s biography Turbaned Tornado — is not just one of athletic achievement but of enduring courage. His last rites will be held in Beas Pind once his children arrive.
In a world chasing speed, Fauja taught us the beauty of pace, purpose, and perseverance.
Rest in power, Sardar ji. You’ve crossed your final finish line, but your legacy will keep running.
