Lucknow: The poignant stage play “Do Akeli”, depicting the emotional journey of two sisters, was successfully performed in the city under the direction of noted theatre artist Anupam Bisaria. The play was presented by the Shraddha Manav Seva Kalyan Samiti as part of its Repertory Grant presentation for the year 2025–26 supported by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The performance was held at the Buddha Research Institute.
The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by chief guest Girish Chandra Mishra, who also extended his blessings to the artists associated with the production. On behalf of the organizing body, patron Alok Kumar Pandey and founder-president Achala Bose welcomed the chief guest by presenting a shawl, memento and bouquet.
The storyline of the play revolves around the touching lives of two real sisters who marry two real brothers and end up sharing the same household. The elder sister Naseeban suffers throughout her married life due to her abusive and irresponsible husband. Despite enduring years of hardship, she hopes that her son Jalal will grow up and become her support. However, after marriage, Jalal moves away with his wife and child, leaving his mother alone once again.
Meanwhile, the younger sister Zeenat becomes a widow soon after her marriage and has neither children nor family support. Naseeban becomes her only companion. The two sisters spend their lives caring for Jalal and his son Chhotu, but when they leave the house, the sisters are left completely alone. To survive, they sell roasted corn to schoolchildren and struggle to make ends meet.

The play poignantly portrays their daily life—filled with small arguments, affection, complaints and reconciliation—reflecting the loneliness and emotional bond between the sisters. Their shared struggle and companionship form the emotional core of the story.
In the performance, Sushma Shukla played the role of Naseeban, while Anita Verma portrayed Zeenat. Director Anupam Bisaria also appeared on stage in the role of Sajjan Miya. Yogesh Shukla played Jalal and Vansh Shukla appeared as Chhotu. The powerful performances by the cast deeply moved the audience and earned appreciation from theatre lovers present at the venue.
