Dhaka: Just like IPL is held in India, BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) T20 league is played in India’s neighboring country Bangladesh. Some franchises of this league owe a lot of money to foreign players. Officials of the World Cricket Association (WCA) have requested the leadership group of the Bangladesh Premier League to resolve the problem of foreign players’ dues soon. Many teams owe the players who participated in the last season of BPL.
According to the report of Cricbuzz, the global body of players in cricket, WCA, which collectively represents players from most of the top cricket playing countries through the domestic players association, has already sent a letter to the board regarding the issue of non-payment of foreign players. WCA Chief Executive Officer Tom Moffat has also confirmed the matter to Cricbuzz. Apart from this, Nazmul Abedin, Secretary of the Governing Council of BPL, has also admitted that the foreign players are owed money.
At least 15 cricketers who played in the last BPL season have complained of non-payment, amounting to around US$250,000 (around 2.10 crore Indian rupees), while one franchise, which played the last edition but is not participating in this edition, is owed around US$100,000. Bangladesh Cricketers Welfare Association member Debavrata Paul has said that 12 of the 15 players have been paid by the franchises, while 3 players are owed by the three franchises.
Comilla Victorians, Chittagong Challengers and Durdanto Dhaka participated in the last edition but are not participating in the upcoming season. Sylhet Strikers, Khulna Tigers, Rangpur Riders and defending champions Fortune Barishal will continue to participate in the tournament, while Chittagong Kings, who participated in the first two seasons of the league, are set to return after a gap of 11 years. In addition, two new teams, Dhaka Capitals and Durbar Rajshahi, joined the BPL this season.
