Drivers Protest Against Cab and Auto Aggregators in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A large-scale protest erupted across Bhubaneswar as hundreds of auto and cab drivers halted their services, voicing their opposition to high commission rates and what they describe as exploitative practices by ride-hailing platforms. The demonstration, organized by local driver unions, aimed to highlight unfair pricing models that drivers say have severely affected their earnings and overall livelihoods.

“The fares fluctuate wildly with no consistency,” said one protesting driver. “This leaves customers frustrated and us struggling to make enough to support our families. We need a pricing model that works for everyone.”

The protests also included opposition to the operation of bike taxis by these platforms, which unions claim are illegal and unsafe for passengers. The demonstrations have caused significant disruptions in daily commutes throughout the city as drivers rallied together, demanding fairer treatment, better working conditions, and an end to what they describe as exploitative business practices.

Dina Bandhu Nayak, founder of Smart City Online Association, spoke on behalf of the protesting drivers: “We are protesting against the high commissions charged by platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. These companies exploit us by not maintaining fair prices, and it’s affecting our earnings. We’re also against the illegal bike taxis, which are unsafe for everyone. We support Odisha Yatri, the government-backed app, as it addresses many of our concerns, offering fair pricing and safety features like integration with local police services. It’s a platform that benefits both drivers and riders.”

In addition to concerns about high commission rates, drivers voiced frustration over arbitrary deductions made by these aggregators. “The commissions are too high, and they deduct additional amounts without any clear reasoning,” explained another driver. “After covering fuel costs and these deductions, we’re left with barely enough to support our families. These practices are simply unsustainable.”

As the protests unfold, many drivers are turning to Odisha Yatri, the state government’s app, as a possible solution. Drivers have pointed to its focus on transparency, fair pricing, and safety as a positive alternative to the ride-hailing giants that dominate the market.

The protests reflect a growing dissatisfaction with private aggregators, with drivers calling for platforms that prioritize their financial stability and professional well-being. With the protests ongoing and commuters experiencing delays, the demand for government-backed alternatives like Odisha Yatri is expected to rise in the coming days.
