Guwahati: In recognition of his remarkable research and significant contributions to tuberculosis (TB) eradication, Dr. Surya Kant was conferred the prestigious Dr. Pulla Rao Oration Award at the recently held GP-CON (National Conference of the IMA College of General Physicians) in Guwahati. At the conference, Dr. Surya Kant delivered a keynote lecture on “National Guidelines for TB Treatment: Dos and Don’ts”.
This accolade marks his 19th Oration Award, following 18 previous honors for his extensive contributions to the field of medicine.
Leadership in TB Eradication
Dr. Surya Kant has played a pivotal role in the fight against TB, having led Uttar Pradesh’s TB Task Force for a decade. Currently, he serves as the Chairperson of the National TB Elimination Program (North Zone), overseeing TB control efforts across 10 states in India. Under his leadership, the Respiratory Medicine Department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, received international recognition for its work in TB and lung diseases.
In October 2022, his department was designated as a Centre of Excellence for Drug-Resistant TB Care by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), WHO, and the Government of India.
Pioneering Efforts in TB Care
Dr. Surya Kant has adopted India’s first TB-free village, an urban slum area, and over 100 TB patients, providing comprehensive care. His guidance has enabled the implementation of innovative models like online clinics and the hub-and-spoke system for treating complex TB cases.
He has also contributed significantly to TB awareness through public engagement in print and electronic media. His two Hindi books, including one on TB, were part of the 100 Hindi books released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the third anniversary of the New Education Policy on July 29, 2023.

Academic and Research Achievements
Dr. Surya Kant’s academic contributions are unparalleled. With over 150 research papers on TB, 23 authored books, and 73 book chapters, he has made a significant impact in the medical field. He also holds two US patents and has been recognized among the top 2% scientists globally by Stanford University, USA.
Accolades and Leadership Roles
Dr. Surya Kant’s career is adorned with 207 awards, including the Vigyan Gaurav Award, Uttar Pradesh’s highest scientific honor, and 22 fellowships. He is also a recipient of an honorary D.Sc. degree from Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun.
He has held prominent positions in esteemed medical organizations, including:

- President of the Indian Chest Society and the Indian Science Congress Association (Medical Science Section)
