Dr. Rajeshwar Singh: From Bureaucracy to Transformational Leadership in Sarojini Nagar

Lucknow: Dr. Rajeshwar Singh, a former IPS officer and ex-Joint Director of the Enforcement Directorate, has emerged as a dynamic and impactful leader in Uttar Pradesh politics since being elected as the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Sarojini Nagar in 2022. Representing one of the largest constituencies in Lucknow, with a population exceeding six lakh, Singh has focused on inclusive, sustainable, and results-driven development, transforming the region into a growing hub of education, industry, infrastructure, and innovation.

To empower the youth, Singh has launched 17 Ran Bahadur Singh (RBS) digital education and youth empowerment centres, offering free computer training, artificial intelligence-based learning, and job-oriented courses. Complementing these are 10 Tara Shakti sewing centres that promote women’s self-reliance and entrepreneurship. ITI Neevan further contributes by equipping young individuals with industry-relevant vocational skills.

Industrial development has also been a key driver of growth in Sarojini Nagar, generating over 20,000 employment opportunities.

Singh’s vision extends beyond development to sustainability and urban planning. His ‘Net Zero Sarojini Nagar’ campaign, launched with Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, promotes environmental awareness through plantation drives and climate-resilient initiatives. He has also proposed a 20-year Integrated Traffic Management and Urban Mobility Roadmap to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, focusing on technology-driven solutions for future-ready infrastructure.

Community welfare remains central to his leadership. Initiatives such as helmet distribution drives for road safety, Anna Seva programs for the underprivileged, and dedicated support for Divyang individuals and senior citizens highlight his commitment to social responsibility. Efforts to promote sports and preserve cultural traditions further reinforce community engagement.

Recognized for his contributions, Singh was honoured with the “Excellence in Political and Public Life” Award at the House of Lords by the UK India Legal Partnership. As he marked four years in office in 2026 with “Aabhar Diwas,” he continues to push for a multi-institutional innovation hub and a vibrant startup ecosystem.

Explaining his entry into politics, Singh has said in an interview to a mainstream daily that individuals with expertise must step forward to serve the nation beyond their professional domains. “After achieving my goals in civil services, I felt the need to contribute more directly to society through politics,” he noted.

On policy initiatives, Singh has proposed an Area-Wise Demographic Policy (ADP) to promote balanced population growth, women’s empowerment, and social harmony through data-driven governance. The model suggests classifying regions into Green, Amber, and Red zones based on key social indicators such as fertility rate, education, and migration.

He has also advocated for the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Commission in Uttar Pradesh to guide policy, enhance governance, and build awareness about AI. Singh in his own account emphasizes that AI could play a crucial role in crime analysis, disaster management, and education, even suggesting its inclusion in school curricula at an early stage.

In addition to governance, Singh has had a creative stint, having acted in the 2011 film Kya YahiSach Hai, which explored corruption and the police-politician nexus.

Under his leadership, Sarojini Nagar continues to evolve as a model constituency, blending rapid development with forward-looking policy initiatives and a vision for sustainable, inclusive growth
