Department of Anaesthesiology celebrates 38th Foundation Day; focus on Artificial Intelligence in Critical Care

Lucknow | Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play a transformative role in predicting critical events among ICU patients, said Dr. Rajesh Kumar Pandey, Head of Critical Care at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi. Speaking as the chief guest at the 38th Foundation Day of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, Dr. Pandey delivered the 6th Prof. Soma Kaushik Oration on the topic “Role of Artificial Intelligence in Critical Care.”

Dr. Pandey emphasized that effective data recording is vital for developing AI algorithms capable of early prediction of critical conditions in intensive care units. “In the fast-evolving era of artificial intelligence, accurate data collection forms the backbone of creating reliable AI models. Strong data systems will allow us to design smarter, safer tools to support patient care,” he stated.

The event was held at the Prof. Soma Kaushik Auditorium of the Department of Anaesthesiology. Present on the occasion were Padma Shri Prof. R.K. Dhiman, Director, SGPGI; Prof. Shaleen Kumar, Dean; Prof. Prabhat Tiwari, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology; and Prof. Ajay Sinha, Head of Cardiac Anaesthesia, MM College of Medical Sciences, Ambala.

Prof. Dhiman congratulated the department on completing 38 years of excellence, urging faculty, residents, nurses, and technical staff to continue striving for innovation and academic leadership to make SGPGI’s Anaesthesiology Department one of the finest in the country.

Dean Prof. Shaleen Kumar praised the department’s progress, recalling its journey from two operation theatres to over fifty. “The department has expanded remarkably, offering numerous specialized courses that benefit both students and patients,” he said.

Dr. Sandeep Khuba, the nodal faculty for the Foundation Day program, highlighted the importance of carrying forward the department’s legacy of academic and clinical excellence. The celebration also included awards recognizing outstanding contributors across various categories:

  • Best Junior Resident III: Dr. Kolli Ajit Kumar
  • Best Office Staff: Mahendra Kumar Verma
  • Best Nursing Officer: Sarita Srivastava
  • Best Nursing Officer (Outsource): Atul Tiwari
  • Best Technical Officer: Amit Yadav
  • Best Technical Officer (Outsource): Arjun Kumar
  • Sports Appreciation: Dr. Nitin Trivedi

The event was coordinated by Dr. Sandeep Khuba, Dr. Suruchi, Dr. Sapna Yadav, Dr. Divya Arora, Dr. Lareb Sheikh, along with residents and technical staff. A soulful musical performance by staff members Pramila, Shraddha, Ruchi, Shivani, and Kiran added a special touch to the celebration.

Senior Technical Officer Rajeev Saxena played a key role in organizing the program, which reflected the department’s commitment to innovation, teamwork, and compassionate patient care—values that have shaped its 38-year journey of medical excellence.
