Washington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump referred to France as America’s “oldest ally” and emphasized the strength of their historical collaboration, while French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed their shared commitment to global peace.
Trump, in a post on X, stated, “France is America’s oldest ally. From the start, our beloved collaboration has been a force for peace, freedom, and prosperity.” His statement highlighted the deep-rooted diplomatic ties between the two nations, which date back to the American Revolutionary War.
Macron, in response, underscored the significance of their alliance, saying, “We share the goal of establishing a strong and lasting peace with President Donald Trump. France and the United States of America will always be on the same side of history.”
Trump Discusses Russia-Ukraine War at G7 Summit
Trump also revealed details about his participation in a virtual G7 meeting, during which he referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor” of Canada. The discussions centered on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war and potential resolutions to the ongoing conflict.
“Today, I spoke at the G7 Summit in the Oval Office with French President Emmanuel Macron. The current G7 chair, Canadian Governor Justin Trudeau, called the summit to commemorate the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine War, which would never have begun if I were president,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
During the summit, Trump stressed the importance of a proposed “Critical Minerals and Rare-Earths Deal” between the United States and Ukraine, which he claimed would soon be finalized. He described it as an “Economic Partnership” that would help Ukraine’s economy recover while ensuring that the U.S. recoups billions of dollars in aid and military support previously provided.
Negotiations with Putin
Trump also disclosed ongoing talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling potential progress toward ending the war.
“I am having serious talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the conclusion of the war and the significant economic development deals that the U.S. and Russia will undertake. The talks are going really well,” he stated.
Trump’s comments have sparked reactions from both political allies and critics, with some questioning the feasibility of his diplomatic approach. Meanwhile, the G7 discussions continue as world leaders seek a resolution to the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict.
