Lucknow: In a significant step towards strengthening early childhood education in Uttar Pradesh, a high-level roundtable meeting was held in Lucknow under the theme “Early Foundations, Bright Futures.” The event was jointly organised by the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) of the Uttar Pradesh Government, Sesame Workshop India Trust, and Marico Limited.
The roundtable brought together over 80 stakeholders from government bodies, CSR initiatives, academia, and social organisations to deliberate on creating a joyful, inclusive, and comprehensive early learning model for children in the state. The discussion aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2022, with a particular focus on enhancing Anganwadi centres through play, collaboration, and purpose-driven activities.
Leena Johri, Principal Secretary, Women and Child Development, Uttar Pradesh, highlighted that pre-school education is still a relatively new concept in rural areas, and such dialogues are crucial for developing practical and effective strategies. While infrastructure is essential, she stressed that true transformation comes from creating a curiosity-driven, trust-building, and supportive environment for children and their parents.

Marico Limited’s flagship education initiative, Nihar Shanti Pathshala Funwala, in collaboration with Sesame Workshop India, runs the Learn, Play, Grow programme for children aged 3 to 6 years. Now in its second year, the programme has expanded from 60 to 100 Anganwadi centres, reaching 1,500 children and their parents in Bahraich district. It focuses on learning through play and preparing children for formal schooling.
With Marico’s continued support and Sesame Workshop India’s expertise, the initiative has strengthened Anganwadi worker capacity, fostered engaging educational environments, and contributed meaningfully to India’s early learning goals.

Amit Bhasin, Chief Legal Officer and CSR Committee Secretary, Marico Limited, said, “We believe that the true success of any business is measured by its contribution to society. Education remains our priority, and through Nihar Shanti Pathshala Funwala, we aim to give every child an opportunity to thrive.” He thanked Sesame Workshop India for the partnership, describing the journey as one of transformation, not just numbers.
Sonali Khan, Managing Trustee, Sesame Workshop India Trust, reiterated that every child has the right to learn and grow, and meaningful change is only possible when government, organisations, and corporates work together.
The meeting also saw participation from leading organisations, including HCL Foundation, Jhpiego, Room to Read, Pratham, Aga Khan Foundation, Reliance Foundation, Central Square Foundation, Ernst & Young, and Tata Trusts. All participants shared their experiences and emphasised the collective responsibility in shaping a better educational future for children.
