DGP Prashant Kumar cancels all VIP passes for Kumbh Mela

Lucknow: In a decisive move, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar has canceled all VIP passes issued for the ongoing Kumbh Mela, citing that VIP movements were significantly affecting police operations and crowd management.

The decision comes amid growing criticism of the VIP culture surrounding the sacred event. The issuance of VIP passes, distributed like invitation cards, had created a parallel system that prioritized politicians, industrialists, bureaucrats, spiritual leaders, and renowned journalists. Many of them were seen performing rituals and bathing at exclusive VIP ghats, raising concerns about preferential treatment in what is traditionally a mass religious gathering open to all.

DGP Kumar’s action sends a strong message: “The Kumbh Mela is not a private event. It is rooted in faith and devotion, where people come voluntarily, driven by their spiritual beliefs. No one needs an invitation.”

Critics argue that the VIP culture not only disrupted the spiritual essence of the Kumbh but also compromised public safety. The focus of the administration reportedly shifted towards facilitating VIPs—ensuring special parking spots, direct vehicle access to restricted areas, and dedicated security arrangements. This diverted resources away from managing the general crowd, leading to incidents of mismanagement and even accidents involving regular devotees.

Now, with the VIP passes revoked, questions arise about how many influential figures will have the courage to participate in the Kumbh Mela as ordinary devotees, experiencing the event alongside the masses without special privileges.

The move is being hailed as a step towards restoring the sanctity and egalitarian spirit of the Kumbh Mela, reminding everyone that faith knows no hierarchy.
