Detective Eken Babu takes the airwaves by storm

Mumbai: After eight successful web seasons and three hit films, Bengal’s beloved and deceptively simple detective Eken Babu has finally made his way to national television. The Hindi-dubbed episodes of the popular franchise premiered on Sony SAB on November 24 at 10 PM, introducing the iconic sleuth—played by acclaimed actor Anirban Chakrabarti—to a whole new audience across India.

Marking the show’s launch on Sony SAB, Anirban opened up about the enduring charm of Eken Babu, his quirky habits, and what makes the character so distinct from traditional detective portrayals.

According to Anirban, Eken Babu’s timeless appeal lies in his refreshing normalcy. “He isn’t a grand hero with dramatic flair,” he said. “He’s simple, almost deceptively so, but behind that simplicity is a sharp, observant mind. People relate to him because he feels like someone you could meet on the street—someone your family might underestimate until he solves a case in the most unexpected way.”

With the show now available in Hindi, Anirban views this moment as a milestone. “Eken has lived in the hearts of Bengali audiences for years. Sony SAB bringing him to viewers across India feels like he’s stepping onto a bigger stage,” he shared. “I’m excited to see how new audiences respond to his charm, humour, and that unmistakable Kolkata flavour.”

Unlike most TV detectives who carry an air of intimidation, Eken Babu brings innocence, subtle humour and an unassuming presence. “He doesn’t scare suspects—he disarms them,” Anirban explained. “His methods are odd, almost childlike, yet effective. His comedy isn’t forced; it flows naturally from his personality.”

Balancing humour and mystery, he said, has always been the core of the character. Anirban revealed that Eken’s quirks have even rubbed off on him over the years—especially his knack for noticing tiny details and his love for good food.

Why does Anirban think viewers nationwide will embrace Eken Babu? “At heart, he is an ordinary man with extraordinary intelligence,” he said. “Every Indian knows someone like that—an unassuming uncle, a clever friend, a sharp neighbour. His warmth, soft humour, and unique way of thinking connect with everyone.”
