Design Festival-2026 Highlights Sustainable Design and Traditional Craftsmanship at Amity University

Lucknow: To provide students with a dynamic platform for experiential learning, collaboration, and appreciation of India’s rich craft traditions, Amity School of Fashion Technology (ASFT) and Amity School of Fine Arts (ASFA), Amity University Lucknow Campus, inaugurated a six-day Design Festival–2026 today on the theme “Design for a Better Tomorrow.”

The festival features a series of creative and skill-based workshops, including Pottery, Screen Printing, Tie and Dye, and Mandala Art, along with an exhibition showcasing Jamdani and Kani crafts from Pahalgam, Kashmir; Ajrakh craft from Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh; and other handmade artisan products.

The festival was inaugurated by the Chief Guest,  Mahendra Pratap Singh, Deputy CEO, UP Khadi Village Industry Board, along with Prof. (Dr.) Pooja Verma, Director, ASFT and ASFA;  Rehmat Ali, Ajrakh artisan from Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh; and Shri Manjoor Ali, Jamdani and Kani artisan from Kashmir, by lighting the ceremonial lamp. The event is being organised under the guidance of the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Amity University Lucknow Campus, Prof. (Dr.) Anil Vashisht.

Welcoming the guests, Prof. (Dr.) Pooja Verma said that the Design Festival serves as a vibrant platform for creativity, experiential learning, collaboration, and cultural appreciation, reaffirming Amity University’s commitment to nurturing innovation and promoting a sustainable, design-driven future. She added that handcrafted artisan works are the soul of Indian culture and heritage.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Mahendra Pratap Singh highlighted the importance of traditional crafts, sustainable practices, and rural entrepreneurship in shaping the future of design. He stated that while machine-made products may be cheaper, handmade creations reflect true artistry and cultural value. Citing the example of Khadi, he explained that authentic Khadi is produced entirely by hand — from spinning the thread on the charkha to weaving the fabric on the handloom. “Khadi is not just a cloth; it is a thought,” he remarked.

A fashion show based on Khadi and handmade fabrics was also staged during the inauguration session. The garments showcased were designed and presented by the students of ASFT, reflecting innovation blended with traditional craftsmanship.

Distinguished artisans  Rehmat Ali and Manjoor Ali also conducted workshops and enriched the festival with their expertise. Dr. Lali Priya and Dr. Angad Kumar Verma, Assistant Professors, ASFT, are coordinating Design Festival–2026 and have ensured its seamless and successful execution.
