New Delhi: In a horrifying incident that unfolded in Delhi’s upscale Vasant Vihar area, a speeding Audi car driven by an allegedly intoxicated man ran over five people sleeping on a footpath late Saturday night. Among the injured was an eight-year-old girl. The victims, all daily wage laborers from Rajasthan, sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.
According to the Delhi Police, the incident occurred around 1:30 AM near Shiv Camp, under the Munirka Flyover. The victims were asleep on the pavement when the luxury vehicle lost control, mounted the footpath, and ploughed through them. The car didn’t stop there—it later crashed into a stationary truck near the Shankar Vihar Army Camp.
Victims Identified, Condition Critical
The injured have been identified as Narayani (35), Bimla (8), Sabami alias Chirma (45), Ramchandra (45), and Ladhi (40). All of them had migrated from Rajasthan to Delhi for work and were living under makeshift shelters near the flyover.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as one of chaos and panic. A passerby, showing quick presence of mind, noted the Audi’s number plate and alerted local residents and police.
Accused Caught After Second Collision
Shortly after the hit-and-run, army personnel patrolling near the Shankar Vihar Army Camp detained the driver when his car rear-ended a parked truck. Police arrived and confirmed that it was the same Audi involved in the Vasant Vihar tragedy.

The driver has been identified as Utsav Shekhar (40), a resident of Dwarka. Preliminary tests indicate he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He has been arrested and charged under IPC sections related to reckless driving, endangering life, and causing grievous hurt by negligent conduct.
Police Investigation Underway
Delhi Police have registered a case and launched a full-scale investigation. The car has been seized and CCTV footage from the area is being examined to understand the sequence of events.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) said, “This is a deeply tragic incident. We are ensuring that the victims receive the best medical care and the accused is brought to justice swiftly.”
The accident has once again raised serious concerns over road safety, drunk driving, and the vulnerability of the homeless and migrant workers in urban spaces.
