Delhi Police Cracks Down on Drug Traffickers with PIT-NDPS Act

New Delhi – In a major offensive against drug trafficking, the Delhi Police have intensified their crackdown on notorious drug peddlers using the powerful Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS Act). This law allows for the detention of repeat offenders for up to a year without trial, a move that is creating fear among traffickers and is central to the “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (Drug-Free India) campaign.

According to police officials, the focus has been on dismantling the entire network of traffickers. In a significant case, the police have arrested a 40-year-old woman named Kusum and have seized assets worth Rs 5 crore, which were allegedly acquired through drug trafficking. These properties are located in Sultanpuri and Rohini.

Strict Action Under PIT-NDPS Act

The PIT-NDPS Act, which has been used more frequently since 2021, is applied in cases where a suspect is repeatedly involved in drug trafficking. After gathering evidence, the case is sent to a screening committee of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Once approved by the central government, the accused can be sent to jail for up to a year without a formal trial. This measure is intended to be a strong deterrent against persistent offenders.

This year, the police have already initiated action against four drug traffickers under this act, with three already sent to jail. Furthermore, the police are preparing to detain 35 more traffickers under the same law. This marks a significant increase from the 28 traffickers detained over the past four years, signaling a more aggressive and targeted approach.

Disconnecting Networks and Seizing Assets

A key strategy is to break the communication and operational networks of these traffickers. For instance, a drug peddler from Bareilly, who was repeatedly caught with heroin, was sent to a jail in Chennai to sever his ties with local associates and disrupt his network.

Police sources reveal that all district police are compiling a list of drug traffickers who have two or more cases registered against them. This targeted approach is expected to not only lead to more arrests but also to dismantle the drug trade in the city. The Delhi Police’s message is clear: the crackdown on drug traffickers will continue with a zero-tolerance policy, and a united and tough fight will be waged against the drug trade.
