Delhi Capitals Make Surprise Move, Appoint Faf du Plessis as Vice-Captain Ahead of IPL 2025

New Delhi: In a significant development ahead of the much-anticipated IPL 2025 season, Delhi Capitals have appointed South African veteran Faf du Plessis as the vice-captain of the squad. The franchise made the announcement via their official social media accounts on Monday, creating a buzz among fans and cricket enthusiasts.

Du Plessis Excited for Leadership Role

In a video shared by Delhi Capitals, Faf du Plessis confirmed the appointment with enthusiasm. “You mean from now? Of course, I’m at home, where else would I be? Yes, it’s true—I am DC’s vice-captain and I’m really excited. Delhi has been fantastic, the boys are great, and I’m definitely happy and ready,” du Plessis said.

Bought for ₹2 Crore at IPL 2025 Auction

Du Plessis was acquired by Delhi Capitals during the mega auction in Jeddah last year for ₹2 crore, his base price, after being released by his previous team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). His inclusion in the leadership group suggests he will be a key figure in the team’s playing XI and will assist captain Axar Patel both on and off the field in strategic decision-making.

Proven Track Record as Captain

Du Plessis, who has captained South Africa in international cricket, also led RCB in IPL seasons 2022 to 2024. Under his captaincy, RCB played 42 matches, winning 21 and losing 21, and reached the playoffs twice. However, the team was knocked out in the Eliminator on both occasions.

IPL Career Highlights

Over the past five IPL seasons, Faf du Plessis has been a consistent performer, scoring 2,718 runs in 74 innings. His experience and leadership are expected to boost DC’s campaign as they aim for their maiden IPL title.

New Coaching Setup at Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals have also revamped their support staff for IPL 2025. The new coaching team includes:

  • Hemang Badani (Head Coach)
  • Venugopal Rao (Director of Cricket)
  • Munaf Patel (Bowling Coach)
  • Matthew Mott (Assistant Coach)
  • Kevin Pietersen (Mentor)
  • Gyaneshwar Rao & Anton Roux (Fielding Coaches)

Season Opener Against Lucknow Super Giants

Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2025 journey against Lucknow Super Giants on March 24 at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Alongside Punjab Kings and RCB, DC remains one of the three franchises yet to win an IPL title—a statistic they hope to change this season under the leadership of Axar Patel and du Plessis.
