Defence Secretary Meets PM Amid Rising Tensions with Pakistan

New Delhi: In the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and the escalating tensions with Pakistan, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday in what is being described as a high-level and significant security discussion.

This meeting follows a series of consultations with top military officials. Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, the Chief of the Air Staff, had met the Prime Minister on Sunday, while Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi held discussions with PM Modi on Saturday. Admiral Tripathi briefed the Prime Minister on the overall situation in the Arabian Sea, particularly focusing on key maritime routes and naval readiness.

Key Security Discussions at PM’s Residence

The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s official residence on Lok Kalyan Marg and comes days after a major security review chaired by the PM himself. That earlier meeting included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of all three armed forces. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was also present.

Cabinet Committee on Security Convenes After Pahalgam Attack

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) had convened urgently following the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 innocent tourists dead. The CCS reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to eliminating terrorism at its roots. PM Modi asserted that those responsible—both the perpetrators and their conspirators—would face strict and decisive punishment.

The government has granted the armed forces full operational freedom to choose the timing, method, and scale of retaliation.

All-Party Meeting Signals National Unity

In a show of national unity, the government also called an all-party meeting to brief political leaders on the situation. Opposition parties extended full support to any strong measures the government takes against those responsible for the terror plot.

During the CCS briefing, officials provided evidence linking the attack to cross-border elements, highlighting its likely motive to destabilize the ongoing democratic process and economic development in Jammu and Kashmir.

India Sends Strong Message to Pakistan

The government has taken multiple stringent actions against Pakistan. Among them, the Indus Waters Treaty has been suspended—a rare and serious diplomatic signal. Additionally, new restrictions and sanctions have been imposed by the Modi government to pressure Islamabad over its continued support for cross-border terrorism.
