Crackdown on Illegal Liquor Trade in Uttar Pradesh: Nearly 2,000 Arrested in August

Lucknow– The Yogi Adityanath government’s zero-tolerance policy against illegal liquor trade has yielded significant results, with enforcement agencies tightening their grip on bootleggers across Uttar Pradesh.

According to official data, between August 1 and 31, as many as 10,503 cases were registered, leading to the seizure of 2.69 lakh litres of illicit liquor. During this period, 1,995 individuals were arrested, out of which 351 were sent to jail, while 23 vehicles used in smuggling were confiscated.

Highlighting the state-wide action, Minister of State for Excise and Prohibition (Independent Charge) Nitin Agarwal said a 10-day special enforcement drive, running from August 28 to September 6, has further intensified the crackdown. By August 31 alone, the campaign had led to 1,587 cases, 38,099 litres of liquor seized, and 340 arrests, including 83 people sent to jail. Authorities also impounded three vehicles used in transportation.

The minister noted that strict vigilance and coordinated action are not only curbing the illegal liquor trade but also boosting state revenues. By August of the 2025–26 fiscal year, Uttar Pradesh recorded ₹22,337.62 crore in excise revenue, an increase of ₹3,021.41 crore (15.64%) compared to the same period last year. For August alone, the excise collection stood at ₹3,754.43 crore, marking a 4.86% growth.

Agarwal credited the progress to CM Yogi Adityanath’s uncompromising stance, saying: “The Chief Minister’s zero-tolerance policy is the biggest reason for this success. Departmental enforcement campaigns have accelerated the crackdown and ensured consistent revenue growth.”

The state government has reiterated that operations against illicit liquor will continue with the same intensity in the coming months to dismantle the network of bootleggers and ensure public safety.
