Experts from across India deliberate on rising liver ailments, NAFLD, and obesity-related disorders
Lucknow | The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, hosted the 25th Conference on Current Perspectives in Liver Diseases (CPLD-2025) on October 25–26, bringing together the country’s top hepatology and gastroenterology experts for an in-depth discussion on the growing burden of liver diseases in India.
The two-day conference, organized by SGPGI’s Department of Hepatology, featured prominent figures in the field, including Padma Shri Prof. R.K. Dhiman (SGPGI), Prof. Anoop Saraya (ILBS, New Delhi), Prof. Ajay Duseja (PGIMER, Chandigarh), Prof. Rakesh Agarwal (SGPGI), and Prof. A.C. Anand (KIMS, Bhubaneswar).
Sessions during the conference included lectures, debates, and panel discussions focusing on pressing challenges such as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), alcohol-related liver disorders, and cirrhosis management. Experts highlighted that NAFLD is emerging as a major public health concern in India, largely linked to obesity and changing lifestyles.
The first day of the event centered on obesity and fatty liver disease, featuring a panel discussion on the current status of NAFLD in Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Alka Sharma, program officer for NAFLD under the National Health Mission (NHM), presented insights on the state’s ongoing initiatives to assess disease burden and strengthen training programs for healthcare providers.

Over 40 doctors from NHM and adjoining districts participated, emphasizing the collaborative effort to integrate liver disease prevention into public health strategies across the state.
The second day of the conference focused on alcohol-related liver diseases, complications of liver cirrhosis, and their advanced management. Nearly 400 participants, including physicians from NHM and ESIC, as well as MD, DM, and DNB trainees from across India, attended the sessions.
Prof. Amit Goyal, Head of the Department of Hepatology at SGPGI, announced that the institute plans to soon launch a “Fatty Liver and Obesity Clinic” to provide specialized care and awareness for patients suffering from NAFLD and related metabolic disorders.
The CPLD-2025 conference underscored SGPGI’s continuing leadership in liver disease research and its commitment to addressing India’s rising liver health challenges through collaboration, innovation, and early intervention.
