Comprehensive Dog License Checking Drive Led by Animal Welfare Officer

Lucknow: Under the direction of the Municipal Commissioner, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation’s Animal Welfare Department launched a comprehensive dog license checking drive. The drive was conducted with active participation from Animal Welfare Officer,  Nadeem, along with officials Shivak Verma, Rajesh Upadhyay, Furkan Ahmed, and Ramkumar.

During the course of the campaign, a total of 6 individuals were found walking their dogs without licenses. These individuals were fined a total of ₹30,000 for the violation. Additionally, 4 new dog licenses were issued, including one for an Indian breed dog, generating ₹33,200 in total revenue for the municipal corporation.

As the drive continued, several people were seen rushing to get their dogs indoors, while others attempted to engage in arguments with the team. Notably, there were also individuals who presented their dog licenses and vaccination cards without any issue.

Under the rules, individuals who fail to present a license are liable for a fine of up to ₹5,000 per dog. In cases of unlicensed dogs, the animal can be seized by the authorities.

Statistics & Observations:

  • In the current fiscal year 2024-25, only 4,130 dog licenses have been issued so far, which is a significant drop compared to the 5,600 licenses issued in the 2023-24 fiscal year and 8,200 in 2022-23.
  • To address this declining trend, the Municipal Corporation has implemented a special dog license checking drive every Saturday in December.
  • As a result of the ongoing campaign, the Municipal Corporation has collected ₹1,16,400 in fines and license fees. Following the drive, there has been a notable increase in the number of dog licenses being issued.

  • The total number of pet dogs in Lucknow is estimated to be over 10,000. However, dog licenses are only issued after confirming rabies vaccination and obtaining an affidavit that complies with the “Dog Control Rules 2003” set by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation.
