Lucknow — Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the Torrent Group’s Green Hydrogen Plant in Gorakhpur , marking a historic milestone in the state’s renewable energy journey. The plant is Uttar Pradesh’s first and the second such facility in India, dedicated to advancing clean and sustainable energy solutions.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said that green energy will play a decisive role in protecting the environment, strengthening the health sector, and preventing serious diseases in the future. “This plant is a major step towards a pollution-free energy ecosystem. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Uttar Pradesh is committed to moving towards a Net Zero Carbon future,” he added.
Highlighting the plant’s unique role, he explained that the facility will enable blending of hydrogen energy with CNG, which will subsequently be supplied as cooking gas through pipelines (PNG) to households. This, he said, would ensure wider access to affordable and eco-friendly energy.

Adityanath underlined that hydrogen energy is the future of green energy, with immense global potential. “As research advances and new machinery is developed, hydrogen energy will become more affordable—like mobile technology did in its time. This energy has the power to change the destiny of the world,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister also praised the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which has already provided over 10 crore free LPG connections to poor families across India. This, he said, not only reduced dependence on firewood but also helped millions escape respiratory and eye-related diseases. He noted that on Independence Day 2025, Prime Minister Modi announced major funding for the next phase of the scheme, which will help stabilize cooking gas prices and expand PNG access across the country.
Adityanath further pointed out that Uttar Pradesh has set a renewable energy target of 22,000 MW, of which 6,000 MW has already been achieved. With abundant natural resources—including water reserves from the Rapti River and shallow groundwater—he said the state holds vast potential in green energy generation.

Touching on environmental concerns, he stressed the urgent need to minimize carbon emissions and adopt natural farming and green energy. “Excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers is harming both nature and human health, leading to cancer, liver diseases, and climate change effects like irregular rainfall. Natural farming can save our soil, protect cattle, and produce healthy food, while green energy will safeguard our future,” he said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the state’s success in energy efficiency through the widespread adoption of LED street lights, which reduced both power consumption and carbon emissions. He noted that Uttar Pradesh has the highest potential for green energy in India, and today’s initiative by Torrent Group strengthens that vision.
Praising Torrent Group, he said the company has already been supplying electricity in Agra and PNG in 16 districts, and with the Gorakhpur project, it is now pioneering hydrogen-CNG blending for household supply. “This group will not only produce green energy but also serve as a hub of innovation, improving people’s quality of life,” he added.
The event was also addressed by MP Ravi Kishan Shukla and Torrent Group Director Jinal Mehta. It was attended by public representatives, senior officials from the government and administration, and a large gathering of local citizens.
