Chain Snatching Case in Lucknow’s PGI Area Solved, Three Habitual Offenders Arrested

Lucknow:  The PGI Police in Lucknow have successfully cracked a recent chain-snatching case involving an elderly woman. Three notorious criminals were arrested from beneath the railway overbridge near Barauli Crossing. Along with the arrests, police recovered the looted jewellery and illegal firearms.

Arrested Accused:

  1. Sumit Chauhan (Age 20), son of Rakesh Chauhan, resident of Nepalganj, PGI area, Lucknow

  2. Vikas alias Kulhad (Age 21), son of late Mahesh Balmiki, resident of Nepalganj, Telibagh, PGI area

  3. Ayush Shakya (Age 21), son of Pawan Kumar Shakya, resident of Defence Colony, Telibagh, PGI area

The Incident

On the evening of May 10, 2025, around 8 PM, Madhavi Devi, a senior citizen living in Vrindavan Colony, was sitting outside her home when an unidentified man suddenly snatched her gold chain and fled. The next day, her son Mohan Singh filed a complaint at the PGI Police Station. A case was registered under FIR No. 208/2025 and booked under Section 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Recovered Items

  • One gold pendant and four small gold beads

  • One country-made pistol (.12 bore) and two pistols (.315 bore)

  • Three live cartridges

Interrogation Findings

During questioning, the accused revealed that they operated as a gang, deliberately targeting elderly individuals and lone women. After committing the loot, they would divide the stolen items among themselves. All three men are repeat offenders and have previously served jail time for various crimes.

Criminal Records of the Accused

  • Sumit Chauhan: Involved in 5 cases, including robbery and under the Goonda Act

  • Vikas alias Kulhad: Involved in 3 cases, booked under serious criminal sections

  • Ayush Shakya: Linked to 4 cases, all related to robbery and Arms Act violations

Police Team Awarded

In recognition of the swift and effective resolution of the case, the PGI Police Team was awarded a cash prize of ₹10,000 by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Zone).

The arrests mark a major step in curbing street crimes in the area, particularly those targeting vulnerable sections of society. Police continue to crack down on repeat offenders as part of their ongoing anti-crime operations across Lucknow.
