CDRI Champions Green Innovation with Solar Energy and Organic Waste Solutions

Lucknow: In a significant stride towards sustainable research infrastructure, CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, marked World Environment Day 2025 with the launch of two major eco-friendly initiatives — a 1.2 MW rooftop solar power plant and a 500 kg/day organic waste composting unit. These green projects are part of the institute’s 75th anniversary celebrations and a broader commitment to environmental stewardship.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr. Ajit K. Shasany, Director, CSIR-NBRI (chief guest), and featured a special lecture by environmental scientist Dr. S. Venkata Mohan, Director, CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur. Dr. Mohan emphasized the link between untreated wastewater and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), calling for the adoption of “One Health” and circular bioeconomy approaches. He cautioned that wastewater is not just an ecological concern but a growing public health risk.

Presiding over the event, CDRI Director Dr. Radha Rangarajan highlighted the deeper message behind the new installations. “These green initiatives are more than infrastructure—they represent a shift in lifestyle. Small, conscious actions are critical to reduce our carbon footprint,” she said.

One such lifestyle change was launched in the form of #BringYourOwnCup, an internal campaign promoting the elimination of single-use plastic. Under this initiative, all scientists, researchers, and staff were given personalized ceramic cups to replace disposable ones.

The newly commissioned organic composting machine, introduced by Engineer Ranveer Singh, will convert kitchen and garden waste from the institute’s canteen, hostels, and guest house into high-quality compost within 24–48 hours. The odor-free and energy-efficient unit reduces organic waste by up to 80% and will support CDRI’s internal horticulture needs — a key example of circular waste management.

Dr. Ajit Shasany lauded the institute for emerging as a model of green research infrastructure, and urged all scientific bodies to lead the charge in low-carbon development and climate consciousness.

During the event, Dr. Radha Rangarajan honored Dr. Venkata Mohan and Dr. Shasany for their notable contributions to environmental science and sustainable development.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Engineer Kamal Jain, who reaffirmed CDRI’s commitment to innovative, environment-first research practices that benefit both science and society.
