Lucknow: The Centre of BioMedical Research (CBMR), a premier research institute under the Department of Medical Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh, marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 19th Annual Day with great fervor. The event was a grand showcase of CBMR’s journey over the past two decades—highlighting its world-class research, translational achievements, and its expanding role in India’s healthcare landscape.
The event was graced by Brijesh Pathak, Deputy Chief Minister and Cabinet Minister for Medical Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh, as the Chief Guest. In his keynote address, Pathak expressed deep appreciation for CBMR’s sustained excellence in cutting-edge research. He lauded the Centre’s role in advancing neuroimaging, biomarker discovery, drug discovery, molecular diagnostics, translational medicine, and its commitment to developing affordable healthcare solutions. Highlighting CBMR as the only biomedical research institute in India fully funded and supported by a state government, he pledged continued support from the Government of Uttar Pradesh for its future growth. He announced that the government would actively work toward expanding infrastructure, laboratory space, and scientific manpower, so the institute can further its mission of serving public health through innovation.
Professor Alok Dhawan, Director of CBMR, presented a detailed report highlighting the institute’s achievements over the past year. He emphasized CBMR’s growing leadership in biomedical imaging, computational modeling of diseases, neurobiology, and chemical biology, and its rising footprint in translational and collaborative research. Professor Dhawan underlined the Centre’s increasing focus on IPR generation, innovation ecosystems, and cross-disciplinary partnerships with both national and international institutions. He reiterated CBMR’s mission to support affordable, accessible, and advanced healthcare solutions through sustained scientific inquiry and innovation.
On this occasion, the “CBMR Research Publication Award” was conferred to elevate and encourage the culture of high-impact scientific research among CBMR faculty members. As the Guest of Honor, Professor Sanjeev Misra, Vice Chancellor of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU), Lucknow, felicitated six distinguished faculty members of CBMR with this prestigious award, acknowledging their exceptional contributions and achievements in the field of biomedical research.
During the function, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the Centre of BioMedical Research (CBMR) and four prestigious institutions—Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow; Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), New Delhi; AIIMS – Raebareli and Amity University Lucknow Campus. These collaborations are expected to significantly strengthen CBMR’s capacity for impactful translational research.
A major highlight of the event was the announcement of an Expression of Interest (EOI) for Technology Transfer with industry partner Q-line Biotech Private Limited, facilitated through the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), Government of India. This strategic move marks a new chapter in CBMR’s mission to translate its in-house scientific innovations into scalable solutions for public benefit through industrial adoption.

The highlight of the day was the prestigious C.L. Khetrapal Memorial Oration, delivered by Professor Ashutosh Sharma, Institute Chair Professor, IIT – Kanpur, President, Indian National Science Academyand Former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. A thought leader in science and innovation, Professor Sharma delivered a compelling lecture emphasizing how technologies like nanotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), and bioengineering are reshaping the future of diagnostics, therapeutics, and personalized healthcare. His address encouraged the scientific community, especially the younger generation, to adopt an interdisciplinary and purpose-driven research mindset, focusing on real-world healthcare challenges.
Guest of Honor, Professor Sanjeev Misra, Vice Chancellor, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU), Lucknow, commended the unwavering dedication and diligence demonstrated by the faculty and staff of the Centre. He acknowledged their pivotal role in advancing the institution’s mission and driving impactful healthcare innovations that are poised to benefit both research and patient care at large.
The celebration witnessed an impressive gathering of eminent dignitaries, policy-makers, renowned scientists, academicians, industry leaders, and enthusiastic students from across the country. The event was marked by the participation of approximately 300 Ph.D. scholars and early-career faculty members representing esteemed institutions such as CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University, Maharishi University of Information Technology, University of Lucknow, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Amity University Lucknow, Era University, National P.G. College, and Isabella Thoburn College, among others. Their active engagement underscored the growing national recognition of the Centre for BioMedical Research (CBMR) as a leading hub for biomedical innovation and academic excellence.
A vibrant research exhibition was also organized as a key highlight of the event, showcasing breakthrough projects, innovative prototypes, and cutting-edge technological advancements developed at the Centre. The exhibition provided a platform for researchers, scholars, and students to present their work to a wider audience, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and inspiring future innovations. It reflected the Centre’s strong commitment to translating scientific research into real-world solutions for societal benefit. Concluding the event, Professor Neeraj Sinha, Dean proposed the vote of thanks.
