Can Axar Patel Lead Delhi Capitals to Their First IPL Title?

New Delhi: As the countdown to the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League begins, the spotlight is firmly on Delhi Capitals and their captain Axar Patel. The franchise, yet to win an IPL title, will once again look to break its long-standing jinx under Axar’s leadership.

Leadership and Key Players

Axar Patel, who played a crucial role in India’s recent T20 World Cup triumph, will lead Delhi for the second consecutive season. Known for his calm temperament and all-round abilities, Axar remains central to the team’s plans with both bat and ball.

The team’s title ambitions will also heavily depend on star wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul and emerging pace sensation Aaqib Nabi, who has impressed with his performances in domestic cricket.

Season Opener and Fixtures

Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. They will then play home matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, followed by an away clash with Chennai Super Kings.

Strengths and Concerns

Delhi Capitals retained much of their core squad from the previous season but have made key additions to strengthen both batting and bowling. Players like Pathum Nissanka, David Miller, and Nitish Rana add depth to the batting lineup.

On the bowling front, the inclusion of Lungi Ngidi and Kyle Jamieson is expected to bolster the pace attack, alongside Kuldeep Yadav’s spin partnership with Axar.

However, the team faces early setbacks with England opener Ben Duckett opting out of the tournament and Australian pacer Mitchell Starc likely to miss initial matches due to workload management.

Key Challenges

One of the biggest selection dilemmas for Delhi will be deciding their opening combination, with multiple options including KL Rahul, Pathum Nissanka, and Prithvi Shaw. Additionally, concerns remain over the team’s performance in powerplay overs and death bowling—areas that cost them crucial matches last season.

Despite a strong start in the 2025 season, Delhi failed to qualify for the playoffs after a late slump, highlighting inconsistency as a major issue.

Title Hopes Alive

With a balanced squad, experienced international players, and a composed leader in Axar Patel, Delhi Capitals will aim to finally clinch their maiden IPL title. The combination of spin strength, explosive batting, and emerging pace talent gives them a competitive edge.

As the new season unfolds, all eyes will be on whether Axar Patel can guide Delhi Capitals to their long-awaited championship glory.
