Lucknow : In a remarkable transformation, the state of Uttar Pradesh—once dependent on trains bringing in water from other states—is now gearing up to emerge as a major hub for water sports and aquatic tourism. This change is being spearheaded by the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, which is working in collaboration with the state government to breathe new life into the region’s water bodies.
A government press release issued on Saturday announced that water sports activities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, and other adventurous water-based experiences will be promoted at seven key dams and reservoirs across the state.
Development of Tourism Infrastructure Across Seven Districts
The selected water bodies are located in Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Sonbhadra, Hamirpur, Jhansi, Siddharthnagar, and Banda. As part of the initiative, these sites will see the development of modern infrastructure, including resorts, boating docks, trekking trails, camping grounds, and dedicated zones for water sports.
The government also plans to boost local tourism by introducing restaurants, improved transportation, and local guide services. These additions aim to enhance visitor experience, while also creating job opportunities for locals.
Turning Natural Assets into Economic Drivers
Officials stated that the goal is to transform these scenic reservoirs and dams into vibrant tourist destinations, thereby utilizing the state’s natural water resources not just for utility, but for recreational and economic purposes.
By integrating eco-tourism, adventure activities, and local community participation, the initiative hopes to promote sustainable tourism and unlock new revenue streams for rural areas.
This shift from water scarcity to water-based tourism marks a milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s development journey, with the state positioning itself as a pioneer in inland water tourism in India.
