Bulandshahr Syana Violence Case: Verdict After 7 Years, 5 Get Life Imprisonment, 33 Sentenced to 7 Years in Jail

Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh – Seven years after the violent incident in Syana, Bulandshahr, the court has finally delivered its long-awaited verdict. In a landmark judgment, the Additional District and Sessions Court-12 (ADJ-12), presided over by Justice Gopal, has convicted 38 individuals in connection with the violence that erupted on December 3, 2018.

Of these, five convicts have been sentenced to life imprisonment for their direct involvement in the murder of Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh, who was the Station House Officer (SHO) of Syana at the time. The remaining 33 individuals have been sentenced to seven years in prison under serious charges including rioting, arson, and attempted murder.

The incident occurred in Chingrawathi village of Syana when rumors spread about the discovery of cow carcasses, triggering large-scale violence. A mob attacked and torched a local police outpost, vandalized public property, and clashed with the police. In the chaos, Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a local youth named Sumit Kumar lost their lives.

The court has also directed that compensation be paid to Inspector Singh’s widow. While the verdict marks a significant step toward justice, Special Public Prosecutor Yashpal Singh expressed dissatisfaction, stating that he intends to appeal to the High Court for harsher punishment. Meanwhile, the defense counsel has also announced plans to challenge the convictions in a higher court.

This judgment brings some closure to one of Uttar Pradesh’s most controversial and politically sensitive cases, highlighting both the challenges of communal violence and the long wait for justice in the Indian legal system.
