Mumbai: England head coach Brendon McCullum has expressed his determination to continue in his role, despite his side’s narrow seven-run loss to India in the T20 World Cup semifinal in Mumbai on Thursday.
McCullum, 44, took over England’s Test setup in 2022 and expanded his responsibilities to the white-ball teams in January 2025, with his current contract running until 2027. His tenure has seen both highs and lows, including a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, which prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to launch a comprehensive review of team preparations earlier this year.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum said, “I love the job. It’s a fantastic role. It comes with its challenges, but that’s part of the territory. We’ve achieved some incredible things over the past few years, but there’s still a lot to accomplish across all formats.”
Reflecting on the recent loss, he added, “It’s important to take a moment to reflect, see what’s working and what isn’t, and ensure we continue to grow as a side.”

England fell short in chasing India’s 254, despite a spectacular 105-run knock off 48 balls by Jacob Bethell. McCullum praised both the innings and the resilience of his white-ball squad under captain Harry Brook.
He said, “The white-ball team has been exceptional since the Ashes, with away victories in Sri Lanka and a strong run to this stage of the T20 World Cup. Under Brook’s leadership, the team has developed a clear identity and mental toughness that’s been impressive.”
Looking ahead, England will host New Zealand for a three-match Test series in June, providing an opportunity to build on their experiences from the T20 World Cup.
