Lucknow: The Department of Endocrine Surgery at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Lucknow, organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Programme and Workshop under the campaign “Paint October Pink.” The event, held at the institute’s conference hall, saw enthusiastic participation from doctors, students, and breast cancer survivors.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof. C. M. Singh, Director, RMLIMS, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, Prof. Singh said that initiatives like “Paint October Pink” not only reflect the social responsibility of medical institutions but also symbolize women’s empowerment and resilience. He emphasized that RMLIMS remains committed to promoting community health and awareness through such meaningful initiatives.

The campaign “Paint October Pink” represents a global movement to raise awareness about breast cancer during October — the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It encourages preventive screenings, early diagnosis, and public participation through symbolic use of the color pink, pink ribbons, and awareness events such as “Paint the Town Pink.”

The event began with a welcome address by Prof. S. K. Mishra, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee. He highlighted that the goal is not only treatment but also prevention through awareness, stressing that early detection and self-examination can save countless lives.

Dr. Sarrah Idris, Organizing Secretary, outlined the programme, explaining that the workshop aimed to educate women on self-examination techniques and dispel myths related to breast cancer. Dean Prof. Pradyumn Singh remarked that awareness remains the most effective remedy, urging the younger generation to adopt proactive health practices.

CMS Prof. Vikram Singh stated that the first step to fighting disease is overcoming fear, emphasizing that breast cancer is treatable and that early detection can significantly increase survival chances.

Adding a crucial lifestyle perspective, Dr. Poonam Tiwari (PhD, RD), Senior Dietitian, delivered a talk on “Prevention of Breast Cancer through Healthy Lifestyle.” She stressed that a balanced diet, regular exercise, and abstinence from smoking and alcohol are vital in reducing breast cancer risk.

A street play (nukkad natak) was performed during the event to spread awareness about breast cancer, leaving a deep emotional impact on the audience. This was followed by kit distribution for cancer patients, felicitation of breast cancer survivors, and practical sessions on ‘iBreast’ screening and breast self-examination.

The programme concluded with a poster competition, prize distribution ceremony, and a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sarrah Idris, marking the end of a day dedicated to awareness, education, and empowerment in the fight against breast cancer.
