Mumbai: Filmmaker Roopa Iyer’s upcoming film Azaad Bharat stands as a heartfelt tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, his enduring legacy, and the historic Rani Jhansi Regiment, the all-women combat unit of the Indian National Army. The film brings to the forefront the inspiring story of Neera Arya and several unsung women freedom fighters whose contributions to India’s independence have remained largely absent from mainstream historical narratives.
Produced by Zee Studios, Azaad Bharat features Shreyas Talpade in the role of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, veteran actor Suresh Oberoi as revolutionary Chhaju Ramji, while Roopa Iyer herself essays the central role of Neera Arya. Iyer also serves as the film’s director and producer, taking on multiple responsibilities to bring this powerful story to the screen. The film’s national anthem has been voiced by Amruta Fadnavis, adding emotional depth to the patriotic narrative.
Sharing her experience, Amruta Fadnavis said that being associated with the film was a matter of pride for her.
“Being part of this film is truly an honour. Azaad Bharat is a beautiful film that presents Neera Arya’s story in a very powerful manner. Roopa Iyer has not only played the lead role but has also directed and produced the film. Handling three major responsibilities in one project is truly commendable,” she said.
She further praised her co-artists, calling Suresh Oberoi an inspiration for everyone.
“Giving my voice to the national anthem of this film fills me with immense pride. Being part of such a prestigious project that pays tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s legacy is a privilege,” she added.
Highlighting the relevance of the film’s theme, Fadnavis noted that one of the most inspiring aspects of Netaji’s legacy was his belief in women empowerment and the formation of the Rani Jhansi Regiment.
“There is hardly any mention of personalities like Neera Arya in history books. I am grateful to Roopa ji for bringing her story to the forefront. The film releases on January 2, the same month in which we celebrate Netaji’s birth anniversary. Watching this film will be our tribute to him,” she said.

Director-producer Roopa Iyer described the journey of making Azaad Bharat as deeply spiritual and purposeful.
“I consider myself blessed, as this film has been made with divine inspiration. From casting the actors to building a connection with them, I felt guided at every step,” she said. Speaking about casting Shreyas Talpade as Netaji, Iyer recalled telling him that his versatility, emotional depth and ability to adapt to complex roles made him the right choice.
She added that the film is a must-watch for the younger generation.
“Despite having many comforts today, we often complain. The stories of Neera Arya, the Rani Jhansi Regiment and countless unsung warriors show how, from a very young age, they devoted themselves to the motherland with nothing but sheer passion and courage,” Iyer said.
Azaad Bharat is scheduled for a worldwide release on January 2, 2026, a month that also marks Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s 129th birth anniversary on January 23, making the film’s release even more meaningful. With strong performances and a powerful patriotic narrative, the Zee Studios production has already generated considerable anticipation among audiences.
