Washington: India’s Ayush Shetty has scripted history by clinching his maiden BWF World Tour title at the US Open Super 300 tournament, defeating Canada’s Brian Yang in the men’s singles final. The 21-year-old Indian shuttler put on a commanding display, winning 21-18, 21-13 in just 47 minutes. With this victory, Ayush not only celebrated his personal milestone but also ended India’s title drought on the senior BWF circuit in 2025.
Ranked 34th in the world, Shetty showed remarkable form throughout the tournament. His semifinal win against top seed and World No. 6 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei was one of the highlights of the tournament. Ayush came back from a set down to triumph 21-23, 21-15, 21-14, turning heads across the badminton world.
In the women’s singles, India’s rising star Tanvi Sharma finished as runner-up. The 16-year-old, who was unseeded, lost to USA’s top seed Beiwen Zhang in the final with scores of 11-21, 21-16, 10-21. The match lasted 46 minutes. Despite the loss, Tanvi made history by becoming the youngest Indian to reach a BWF World Tour final.

World No. 66 Tanvi stunned seventh seed Polina Buhrova of Ukraine in the semifinals, securing a straight-game win of 21-14, 21-16. Her aggressive game and powerful smashes have already drawn comparisons to double Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu. With Sindhu’s form on the decline, Tanvi’s emergence brings new hope for Indian badminton.
Ayush Shetty and Tanvi Sharma’s stellar performances mark a turning point for Indian badminton in 2025, reviving the nation’s presence on the global badminton stage and giving fans plenty to cheer for.
