Ayodhya’s Udhaila Lake to Emerge as New Eco-Tourism Hub

Ayodhya: In a transformative move, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has launched an ambitious project to develop Udhaila Lake, located in Milkipur tehsil of Ayodhya, into a premier eco-tourism destination. Once plagued by encroachment and water scarcity, the lake is now being revived as a scenic and sustainable attraction, adding another feather to Ayodhya’s rapidly evolving tourism landscape.

₹3.81 Crore Development Project Underway

The eco-tourism development is being executed by the Uttar Pradesh Projects Corporation Limited (UPPCL) at a cost of ₹3.81 crore. The project includes the construction of modern amenities such as a cafeteria, toilet blocks, and bamboo cottages. These structures are designed to offer tourists a serene and environmentally conscious experience amidst natural surroundings.

A Vision Beyond Faith Tourism

While Ayodhya has traditionally been a hub for religious tourism, especially after the grand Ram Temple construction and events like Deepotsav, the state government is now expanding its vision to promote natural and adventure tourism as well. The development of Udhaila Lake is a key component of this broader strategy to position Ayodhya as a multifaceted global tourism destination.

Bamboo Cottages to Be Major Draw for Tourists

Regional Tourism Officer Rajendra Yadav stated that the lakefront will feature landscaped green areas and family-friendly facilities, transforming it into an ideal spot for nature lovers, families, and adventure enthusiasts. The use of eco-friendly bamboo cottages is expected to not only enhance the tourist experience but also provide livelihood opportunities for local artisans and entrepreneurs.

Location and Progress Update

Udhaila Lake is situated along the Milkipur-Amaniganj road and work on the beautification project began on July 30, 2024. The project is targeted for completion by December 31, 2024. Key developments currently in progress include:

  • Construction of toilet blocks, ticket counters, and cafeteria

  • Roofing and wall work for bamboo cottages

  • Installation of stone steps at the newly built ghat

  • Construction of a watch tower

A Model for Eco-Friendly Development

The lake’s revival and transformation into a tourist hub reflect the Yogi government’s commitment to environmentally sustainable development. By blending religious, cultural, and natural tourism, Ayodhya is poised to become a dynamic tourism capital attracting visitors from across the globe.

This initiative not only breathes new life into a long-neglected natural asset but also aligns with broader efforts to generate local employment and promote sustainable tourism across Uttar Pradesh.
