Astronauts get to up their style quotient for NASA’s 2026 mission

NASA's 2026 Artemis III moon mission

Washington: Prada and Axiom Space’s collaboration on a spacesuit for NASA’s 2026 Artemis III moon mission blends fashion with cutting-edge space technology. The new Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, praised for its innovative design, represents a shift in how spacesuits are crafted, described as the “luxury sports car” of astronaut wear. Prada’s expertise in custom garments, previously seen in high-tech sailing gear, shines through the suit’s sleek, functional aesthetic, featuring a white exterior with gray and red accents.

This partnership is more than just a stylish venture; it signifies the intersection of fashion, engineering, and space exploration. Prada’s design team, working between Milan and Houston, prioritized flexibility, comfort, and innovation while incorporating subtle fashion elements like red stripes reminiscent of Prada’s Linea Rossa. However, the iconic Prada triangle logo will not be part of the suit, as the project focuses on making space exploration more relatable and engaging for the public.

The venture reflects the growing collaboration between fashion and space industries, with Axiom and Prada viewing it as an entry point into the emerging space economy. As commercial space missions increase, the need for specialized attire will grow, opening new avenues for fashion in space. Prada’s co-creative directors, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, hinted at further contributions to the mission, making this project the start of a broader journey into space fashion.
