Lucknow – Under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the aspirational districts of Sonbhadra and Chandauli in Uttar Pradesh are emerging as role models for grassroots development. Through targeted innovations in education, health, agriculture, and women’s empowerment, these districts are witnessing transformative growth, improving quality of life and inspiring other regions to follow suit.
Sonbhadra: A Revolution in Education and Women’s Empowerment
Sonbhadra has embraced digital transformation in education through the NIPUN Dashboard, a data-driven initiative to enhance the quality of foundational learning in primary schools. The dashboard monitors student attendance, academic performance, and teacher engagement, helping administrators make informed decisions. As a result, the overall teaching and learning experience in the district has seen a marked improvement.
In a parallel effort to uplift rural women, around 50 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in the district have started manufacturing and marketing handmade goat milk soap. This eco-friendly product has not only increased the income of these women but also instilled a sense of entrepreneurship and confidence among them. The initiative stands as a strong example of sustainable livelihood creation and women-led enterprise.
The district is also actively promoting environmental responsibility through the “Mera Plastic Meri Jimmedari” campaign, focusing on plastic waste management and recycling. Additionally, under the Cluster Housing Scheme, tribal families are being provided with quality housing and essential amenities, improving their living standards significantly.
Chandauli: Organic Black Rice Gains Global Demand
Chandauli, another aspirational district of Uttar Pradesh, has gained national recognition by securing the sixth rank among India’s 112 aspirational districts, thanks to its innovative development strategies and strong community participation.

The district has pioneered organic farming of black rice, which is now certified by the Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR). This chemical-free rice variety is gaining increasing demand both in domestic and international markets, directly boosting the income of local farmers and establishing Chandauli as a hub for sustainable agriculture.
In the health sector, Community Health Officer (CHO) of Sikandarpur Chakia has designed an “Antara Tracking Bag”, a practical tool used to monitor hormonal contraceptive (Antara injection) usage among women. This innovation has enhanced the effectiveness of family planning programs and contributed significantly to public health delivery and population control efforts in the region.
Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Development
These success stories from Sonbhadra and Chandauli underscore the impact of locally-driven innovations aligned with the NITI Aayog’s vision for inclusive and sustainable development in aspirational districts. Whether it is improving learning outcomes, empowering women, promoting organic agriculture, or strengthening public health infrastructure, these districts are demonstrating how focused efforts and community participation can accelerate holistic progress.
By turning challenges into opportunities, Sonbhadra and Chandauli are not only changing their own development narrative but are also setting powerful examples for other regions across the country.
