– Free Mammography and Pap Smear Tests for Women Above 40 for One Year Starting March 8, 2025
– Only 1.5% of Women in Uttar Pradesh Get Cervical Cancer Screenings, and Less than 1% Undergo Breast Cancer Screening
Lucknow: Leading healthcare institution Apollo Medics Super Specialty Hospitals, Lucknow, has launched ‘Mission Sankalp,’ an initiative focused on early detection and prevention of breast and cervical cancer among women. Announced on International Women’s Day, the initiative underscores the importance of regular screenings to curb the rising incidence of cancer among women.
The launch event was graced by Uttar Pradesh’s Minister for Women Welfare, Child Development, and Nutrition, Baby Rani Maurya, who emphasized the need for awareness and timely medical screenings.
According to a recent Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) report, breast and cervical cancer are the most prevalent cancers among women in India. The report highlights that three out of five cancer patients in India succumb to the disease, contributing to a 60% mortality rate. Projections suggest that by 2050, cancer-related mortality rates in India could rise from the current 64.9 per 100,000 population to 109.6 per 100,000.
Speaking at the event, Baby Rani Maurya said, “This is a commendable step in the fight against common cancers in women. Uttar Pradesh has a high incidence of breast and cervical cancer, yet the screening rates are alarmingly low. While the government is making continuous efforts to raise awareness, Apollo Hospitals Lucknow’s initiative of offering free screenings to women above 40 years will strengthen these efforts and help reduce the burden of this disease. This initiative will encourage women to prioritize their health.”
Dr. Mayank Somani, MD & CEO of Apollo Hospitals Lucknow, stressed the significance of early screening, stating, “Currently, only 1.5% of women in Uttar Pradesh undergo cervical cancer screening, and less than 1% opt for breast cancer screening. Most cases are detected at an advanced stage, making treatment challenging. The ICMR report indicates that the cancer burden among women is disproportionately high, and mortality rates are rapidly increasing. Regular screenings can help reduce mortality and improve patient outcomes.”
To address this growing concern, Apollo Hospitals Lucknow has introduced ‘Mission Sankalp,’ which will provide free mammography and Pap smear tests for all women above 40 years of age from March 8, 2025, for an entire year.
The primary objectives of this initiative are:
- Encouraging women to undergo regular health check-ups.
- Raising awareness about the early detection of breast and cervical cancer.
- Reducing cancer-related mortality through timely interventions and treatments.
Mammography plays a crucial role in the early detection of breast cancer, while the Pap smear test helps identify cervical cancer. By offering these screenings for free, Apollo Hospitals Lucknow is taking a significant step toward improving women’s health and saving lives.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks to all dignitaries and medical experts for their contributions. ‘Mission Sankalp’ marks a milestone in the fight against cancer, promoting timely screenings and preventive healthcare for women.
