Amit Shah Launches “Bharatpol” to Strengthen International Police Cooperation

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the “Bharatpol” web portal on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for modern technology to enhance crime investigation and apprehend fugitives. The portal, developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is designed to facilitate seamless, real-time collaboration between Indian law enforcement agencies and Interpol.

Speaking at the event, Shah underlined the importance of leveraging cutting-edge technology to expedite investigations and prosecute criminals who flee the country after committing crimes. “We need to use contemporary technology and methods to apprehend and prosecute the criminals who fled India after committing a crime,” he stated.

Key Features of Bharatpol

The Home Minister highlighted the real-time interface of the Bharatpol portal as its most crucial feature. It enables:

  • Instant communication between state and federal law enforcement agencies and Interpol.
  • Easy access to case information from Interpol’s 195 member countries.
  • Expedited investigations and coordination to tackle transnational crime.

According to Shah, the portal will strengthen India’s crime-fighting capabilities by fostering efficient communication and information-sharing among all levels of law enforcement.

Role of CBI and Interpol

As India’s National Central Bureau for Interpol, the CBI plays a pivotal role in coordinating with international agencies. A senior CBI officer elaborated on the operational framework, explaining that Interpol Liaison Officers (ILOs) ensure coordination at the central, state, and Union Territory levels. These ILOs work closely with Unit Officers (UOs) at the level of Superintendents of Police, Commissioners of Police, and Branch Heads within their respective organizations.

The portal’s launch underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s law enforcement capabilities by integrating advanced technologies and fostering international cooperation.

Related Developments The introduction of Bharatpol follows a series of initiatives by the Ministry of Home Affairs to bolster India’s internal security. Shah reiterated the government’s resolve to ensure that technology serves as a catalyst in combating complex and evolving criminal activities.
