Varanasi: In a major boost to Kashi’s religious and tourism infrastructure, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the development of the historic Adikeshav Ghat as a permanent, concrete ghat on the lines of the popular Namo Ghat. The ambitious project, with an estimated cost of ₹20 crore, aims to ease growing tourist pressure while enhancing safety and facilities for pilgrims and visitors.
The proposal submitted by the Tourism Department has received administrative approval, and the process of selecting an agency and preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will begin soon. Construction work is expected to commence shortly thereafter.
Adikeshav Ghat holds immense religious and tourism significance. Devotees visiting the ancient Adikeshav Temple often travel by boat from the ghat to the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, making it a vital spiritual route. Following the development of Namo Ghat, tourist footfall in the area has risen sharply, increasing pressure on nearby ghats. The strengthening and expansion of Adikeshav Ghat is intended to address this demand.
The project follows Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of developing multiple ghats in Kashi on the model of Namo Ghat. The plan also aligns with recommendations from the Ministry of Culture to expand and upgrade riverfront facilities in the region.
Under the approved plan, the ghat will be designed to remain safe during high water levels and floods. Stair heights will be limited to 7–8 inches to ensure ease of access for senior citizens, women and children. Additional facilities will include seating benches, aesthetic façade lighting, modern toilets, a food court, robust lighting systems and other essential amenities.

Authorities have assured that construction will respect the natural flow of the Ganga and preserve religious traditions. An experienced agency or architect will design the project, keeping safety, durability and heritage sensitivity in mind.
Officials believe the permanent development of Adikeshav Ghat will not only improve pilgrim convenience and safety but also give fresh momentum to Kashi’s tourism growth, creating new employment opportunities for local residents.
Welcoming the decision, Pandit Vidya Vibhushan Tripathi, Mahant of the Adikeshav Temple, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister. He highlighted the ghat’s ancient and mythological importance, noting that scriptures describe the Adikeshav area as Lord Vishnu’s first abode in Kashi. The development, he said, will strengthen both the sanctity and security of this revered site while preserving Kashi’s timeless spiritual heritage.
