A Squad Built on Balance, Awaiting Validation

Lucknow: The Indian squad for the forthcoming World Cup has been announced well in advance, a move that has sparked both optimism and debate. While early selection gives players clarity and time to prepare, announcing the final team nearly 50 days before the tournament begins also raises valid questions. It may have been more prudent to wait until the conclusion of the series against New Zealand, which could have offered selectors a clearer picture of form, fitness, and combinations under pressure.

That said, the selected squad appears largely well balanced and reflects the core group that has delivered consistent success in recent matches. The selectors deserve credit for rewarding performances in domestic cricket, a principle often spoken about but not always followed. The inclusion of Ishan Kishan on the back of domestic performances sends a positive message that the pathway from domestic tournaments to the national side still matters.

Ishan Kishan is undeniably a hugely talented cricketer who has produced impactful performances in the past. However, talent must be matched with discipline. His earlier issues with the BCCI over ignoring directives served as a reminder that no individual is bigger than the system. If Kishan is to cement his place, he must show maturity, sincerity, and consistency, ensuring that his career does not drift the way Vinod Kambli’s once-promising journey did.

The absence of Rishabh Pant is another talking point. A player of rare ability, Pant’s non-selection appears to stem from concerns over approach and consistency rather than skill. At the highest level, casualness can prove costly, and the selectors’ message seems clear: talent alone is not enough.

There are also tactical debates. Shubman Gill, while an outstanding batsman, may not yet be ideally suited for the demands of T20 cricket, and at present, there appears to be no room for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the final combination. These are tough calls, but such decisions define tournament selection.

The selectors have continued to back Suryakumar Yadav as a leader, despite his recent struggles with the bat. His past performances in T20 cricket make him a natural fit for the shortest format, and his leadership has brought results. Yet, with the World Cup approaching, a return to form is essential. The upcoming series against the Kiwis will be crucial for him to regain confidence and rhythm.

Overall, the squad has depth, balance, and experience. If form peaks at the right time and discipline is maintained, this team has the potential to deliver success and continue India’s pursuit of World Cup glory.
