Lucknow: A four-day intensive workshop on Dhrupad, one of the most ancient and profound traditions of Indian classical music, concluded on a dignified and inspiring note at Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya. The workshop was organised by the Department of Vocal Music under the Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande Peeth, offering students and research scholars a rare opportunity to delve deep into the theoretical foundations and practical nuances of Dhrupad गायन.
The closing ceremony was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mandavi Singh, whose presence added academic significance to the event. Among those present were Head of the Vocal Department Prof. Srishti Mathur, Head of the Percussion Department Dr. Manoj Kumar Mishra, Assistant Professor (Dance) Dr. Ruchi Khare, along with faculty members, research scholars and a large number of students who actively participated throughout the workshop.
The four-day training was conducted by eminent scholar and Dhrupad exponent Prof. Madhu Bhatt Tailang. During the sessions, she provided comprehensive and practice-oriented guidance on the traditional style of Dhrupad singing, voice cultivation (swar-sadhana), the structured development of alap, rhythmic framework (taal vyavastha), and the disciplined methodology of riyaaz.
Prof. Tailang emphasized the gravity and spiritual depth of Dhrupad, underlining the importance of purity of notes, sustained practice and unwavering dedication. She introduced participants to the subtle and intricate aspects of the genre, helping them understand the meditative and contemplative dimensions that distinguish Dhrupad from other classical forms. Through live demonstrations and interactive sessions, students gained hands-on experience in the traditional presentation style of Dhrupad, enhancing both their technical skills and conceptual clarity.
Participants engaged enthusiastically, showing commitment and reverence towards the demanding discipline that Dhrupad requires. The workshop not only strengthened their vocal techniques but also instilled a deeper appreciation for the philosophical and aesthetic foundations of Indian classical music.
Addressing the gathering at the valedictory session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mandavi Singh described Dhrupad as one of the most ancient and dignified traditions of Indian classical music, representing the depth and spirituality of the country’s musical heritage. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Madhu Bhatt Tailang for her scholarly guidance and practical training. “Her profound knowledge and experiential teaching have provided students with a priceless opportunity to understand the essence of the Dhrupad tradition,” she said, adding that such workshops offer meaningful direction to students’ musical pursuits.

University Registrar Dr. Srishti Dhawan, in her remarks, stated that academic and cultural initiatives of this nature play a crucial role in the holistic development of students. She emphasized that the university remains committed to promoting classical art forms and ensuring that ancient traditions like Dhrupad are carried forward to future generations. Dr. Dhawan expressed confidence that similar workshops would continue to be organised to nurture interest and expertise in India’s rich musical heritage.
Faculty members highlighted that Dhrupad, known for its austere structure and disciplined approach, requires years of dedicated practice. Workshops such as this bridge the gap between classroom learning and immersive training under accomplished gurus, thereby strengthening the practical foundation of aspiring musicians.
At the conclusion of the programme, participants shared their experiences, describing the workshop as highly beneficial, enlightening and transformative. Many students noted that the structured training helped them better understand the architecture of alap, the subtleties of intonation and the meditative discipline essential for mastering Dhrupad.
The successful completion of the four-day workshop reaffirmed the university’s role as a centre for preserving and promoting India’s classical arts. By creating platforms for interaction with distinguished experts, Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya continues to foster rigorous musical training rooted in tradition while inspiring the next generation of performers and scholars.
Through this initiative, students not only gained technical proficiency but also renewed motivation to pursue deeper sadhana in the timeless Dhrupad tradition, strengthening their connection to India’s profound musical legacy.
