Uttar Pradesh Government Grants Essentiality Certificate for New Super-Specialty Course at KGMU

Lucknow: In a landmark development for medical education in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has granted an Essentiality Certificate (EC) to King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow for starting a new super-specialty programme—FNB (Trauma Anaesthesiology and Critical Care)—making KGMU the first institution in the state to introduce this course.

The Essentiality Certificate has been issued by the Medical Education Section-2, Government of Uttar Pradesh, under order number I/1195044/2026, dated January 5, 2026. The approval allows KGMU to launch the two-year super-specialty postgraduate course with two seats per year, marking a significant milestone in strengthening trauma and critical care training in the state.

A First for Uttar Pradesh

The approval assumes added significance as no other medical institution in Uttar Pradesh currently offers postgraduate training in Trauma Anaesthesiology and Critical Care. With this initiative, KGMU becomes the pioneer in the state in this highly specialised discipline, addressing a long-standing gap in advanced trauma care education.

According to the Essentiality Certificate, the state government has confirmed the desirability and feasibility of the course based on the growing demand for trained specialists. The decision has been taken in public interest, considering Uttar Pradesh’s population of 24.14 crore and a doctor–population ratio of 1:2038, which highlights the pressing need for advanced critical care expertise.

Infrastructure, Faculty and Future Vision

The government has verified that KGMU fully meets National Medical Commission (NMC) norms, including infrastructure, faculty strength and clinical material. The university’s 4,500-bed hospital and a 20-bed Trauma Critical Care Unit under the Department of Anaesthesiology provide a strong clinical foundation for the course.

The programme will be supported by experienced faculty, including Dr. Zia Arshad, Professor, and Dr. Ravi Prakash, Associate Professor, ensuring robust academic and hands-on clinical training.

Officials indicated that the next strategic step would be to work towards starting a DM (Doctorate of Medicine) programme in Trauma Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at KGMU. If approved, this would not only be the first DM programme of its kind in Uttar Pradesh, but also the first in India, placing KGMU at the forefront of super-specialty trauma and critical care education nationwide.

Safeguards and Validity

As per NMC guidelines, the Essentiality Certificate will remain valid for three years from the date of issue. The state government has also assured that if fresh admissions are stopped due to regulatory reasons, it will take responsibility for students already admitted, in accordance with NMC and Central Government directions.

Official Communication

The certificate has been formally issued to the Registrar, KGMU, with copies forwarded to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, the National Medical Commission, the Director General of Medical Education and Training, Uttar Pradesh, and the District Magistrate, Lucknow. The order has been signed by Gyanendra Kumar Shukla, Under Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh.

With this pioneering approval, KGMU is set to redefine trauma and critical care education in Uttar Pradesh and potentially across the country, reinforcing its position as a national leader in advanced medical training and patient care.
