Divisional Commissioner Lucknow Chairs Key Meeting on Making the Gomti River Clean

Officials Directed to Ensure 100% Treatment of Drains Flowing into the River

Lucknow: A crucial meeting aimed at accelerating the cleanliness, rejuvenation, and pollution-control efforts for the Gomti River was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant at the Commissioner’s Office.

Senior officials from the Municipal Corporation, Irrigation Department, Pollution Control Board, Jal Nigam, and other concerned departments were present to review ongoing progress and outline the next phase of action.

100% Treatment of Drains Flowing Into the River

Commissioner Pant instructed all departments and implementing agencies to ensure complete treatment of all drains falling into the Gomti, stressing that pollution inflow must be stopped entirely.
He directed that a detailed action plan be prepared and submitted for all untapped and partially tapped drains so that not a single drop of untreated wastewater reaches the river.

Jal Nigam Asked to Submit Sewerage Status in 3 Days

The Jal Nigam (Urban) was instructed to submit within three days the complete status of sewer lines in urban areas

  • how much sewer network has been laid,
  • how much work remains, and
  • the existing gaps.

He also ordered immediate action to repair damaged sewer lines that allow untreated water to enter the river.

Daily Cleaning and Strict Waste Monitoring Along Riverbanks

Commissioner Pant directed the Municipal Corporation to maintain a robust daily cleaning system along riverbanks, ghats, and adjoining areas. He emphasized heightened monitoring to prevent plastic and solid waste from accumulating in riverfront zones.

Strict Vigil on Industrial Pollution

The Pollution Control Board was instructed to conduct regular surprise inspections of industrial units.
The Commissioner ordered routine testing of BOD, COD, and faecal coliform levels and warned of strict action against any industry found discharging effluents into the river.

Update on Drains and Treatment Capacity

Jal Nigam officials informed the meeting that 32 drains currently discharge into the Gomti, of which 26 have been tapped. The Commissioner directed that the remaining drains must also be tapped without delay.

Officials further briefed that the total discharge in the Gomti stands at 730 MLD, out of which 600 MLD is treated. Commissioner Pant instructed that a clear method and action plan be prepared to address the 130 MLD treatment gap and ensure no untreated waste reaches the river.

Show-Cause Notice for Incomplete Preparation

Expressing displeasure at the lack of preparedness by some officials, Commissioner Pant ordered that show-cause notices be issued to Jal Nigam (Urban) officers who attended the meeting without complete data.

He reiterated that no garbage or untreated discharge should be allowed to enter the Gomti River under any circumstances and directed all departments to work in coordinated, time-bound manner.

The meeting concluded with clear directives to accelerate river-cleaning measures and ensure strict compliance across departments to restore the Gomti to a clean, healthy, and pristine state.
