Nepal Interim PM Sushila Karki Calls Gen-Z Movement “Historic,” Vows Full Commitment to Change

Kathmandu: Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called the ongoing Gen-Z youth movement “historic”, stating that her government is fully committed to the reforms and changes demanded by the young generation.

In a video address marking one month since the start of the movement, Karki said the uprising represents “a new mindset and a path toward national reform.” She acknowledged that past governments ignored the voices and emotions of the youth, which she described as a major failure.

“Government ready to embrace change”

Karki emphasized that the current administration is prepared to adopt all necessary reforms to meet the expectations of the youth.
“We must view this revolution with a positive mindset,” she said, urging all sides to maintain peace and avoid violence.

The former Chief Justice and now interim PM added that while many young people feel frustrated, they still hold deep love and hope for the nation. She called for humility from leaders and asked political parties to reform themselves.

Tribute to the martyrs of the movement

Karki paid tribute to the youth who lost their lives during the protests.
“Many have sacrificed their lives and hundreds have been injured. I bow to the martyrs and extend my condolences to their families,” she said.

Protests that shook the nation

The Gen-Z movement began as a protest against corruption and social media restrictions under then-Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli.
During the September 8–9 demonstrations in Kathmandu, 76 people were killed, leading to Oli’s resignation.

On September 12, Sushila Karki took over as Interim Prime Minister. At her recommendation, President Ram Chandra Paudel dissolved Parliament and scheduled general elections for March 5, 2026.

Political tensions continue

Meanwhile, ousted PM Oli has demanded that Parliament be restored, arguing that it is vital for national unity and political stability.

Tensions rose again on Thursday as police arrested 18 Gen-Z activists, including Dr. Nicholas Bhusal, who were demanding the arrest of Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak at Maitighar.

As Nepal stands at a crossroads, Karki’s message signals a new era of accountability, youth participation, and political transformation.
