US Lawmaker Criticises Trump’s Tariffs on India, Calls for Stronger Bilateral Ties

Washington: US Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove has condemned the Trump administration’s steep tariffs on India, describing them as “incredibly unfortunate” and harmful to one of America’s most important strategic partnerships.

Kamlager-Dove, the ranking member of the House Subcommittee on South and Central Asia, said in an interview with an agency that tariffs are “playing a disproportionate role” in limiting cooperation between the two countries. She argued that significant progress made during the Biden administration to strengthen India-US ties was being undone.

She also criticized Republicans for remaining silent or supporting policies that have strained the relationship. “The Republicans are either staying silent or being complicit with policies that create major setbacks,” she said.

Democrats Push Back

Kamlager-Dove and 18 other Democratic lawmakers have signed a letter urging President Trump to “reset and repair” ties with India. The letter, backed by senior Democrats such as Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Pramila Jayapal, Deborah Ross and Brad Sherman, calls for dialogue and a review of the tariff strategy.

She expressed disappointment that no Republican supported the appeal. “Congressional Republicans are scared to tell Trump the truth,” she remarked.

The congresswoman also urged Trump to personally attend the upcoming Quad Leaders’ Summit, emphasizing its importance for Indo-Pacific security.

Visa Restrictions and Talent Loss

Kamlager-Dove warned that Trump’s $100,000 H-1B visa fee and severe cuts to the program will hurt the US economy and discourage Indian talent. “India has the brain power to help us in AI and innovation. Arbitrary policies will only damage America’s competitiveness,” she said.

Geopolitical Consequences

She noted that India’s growing engagement with Russia and China reflects Washington’s hostile approach. “When you are mean to partners and kind to adversaries, you push allies away,” she said, adding that the US is isolating itself from willing partners.

Calling Trump’s policies “reckless” and “punitive,” Kamlager-Dove urged a return to cooperation. “For the sake of our nation and our relationship with India, he must change course,” she said.

She reaffirmed that India remains one of America’s most significant strategic partners and stressed the need for a stable, forward-looking bilateral relationship.
