Gorakhpur: In a significant initiative to honor the unmatched valor and sacrifice of Gorkha soldiers, the Yogi Adityanath-led government is set to establish a grand museum at the Gorkha Recruitment Depot (GRD) in Gorakhpur. The foundation stone of the project will be laid on September 4 by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan.
For the first time, the public will be able to explore the heroic legacy of Gorkha warriors through a dedicated museum. This will be the first such museum of its kind in the country, showcasing the stories of soldiers who have earned global recognition for their bravery.
The Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Urban), C&DS Unit 42, has been entrusted with executing the project. An estimated cost of ₹44.73 crore will cover the beautification of the existing Gorkha War Memorial along with the construction of the museum, ticket counters, toilet blocks, lifts, water bodies, boundary walls, and other infrastructure. The site will also feature a light and sound show, a 7D theatre, and mural paintings.
The Gorkhas are renowned for their combat skills and have been decorated with over 2,700 gallantry awards in the Indian Army. Their contribution dates back to the British era, including the First and Second World Wars. Post-independence, Gorkha soldiers have played pivotal roles in both wars and peacekeeping missions. Today, nearly 40,000 Gorkha soldiers continue to serve in the Indian Army.

The Gorkha Recruitment Depot, established in 1866, is the oldest in India. The current Gorkha War Memorial was built in 1925 to honor their role in World War I. The memorial houses bronze statues of eight legendary heroes, including Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Param Vir Chakra awardee Captain G.S. Salaria, Lt. Col. Dhan Singh Thapa, Captain Manoj Pandey, Ashok Chakra awardee Lt. Col. J.R. Chitnis, Lt. Punit Nath Dutt, Major Man Bahadur Rai, and Naik Nar Bahadur.
The upcoming museum is expected to become a landmark, preserving the legacy of Gorkha bravery for future generations while offering citizens and visitors a deeper glimpse into their glorious past.
